LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell track and field will split forces this weekend, hosting the Bison Open & Multi as well as sending select student-athletes to the Penn State National Invitational. Both meets run Friday and Saturday with early action at Penn State getting underway at noon. The Open & Multi kicks off at 4 p.m. on Friday.
"At the two meets this weekend we can focus on performances to set ourselves up for the Patriot League Championships and hopefully qualify some more people for the IC4A/ECAC Championships,” said head coach Kevin Donner. “This is also a critical weekend as far as deciding who will be representing Bucknell at the Patriot League Championships since we are only three weeks out."
Bucknell will take on 12 other schools at its home meet at Gerhard Fieldhouse. Field event competition on Friday begins at 4 p.m. with the men's shot put, with the pentathlon getting underway at 4:30 and running events beginning at 5 p.m. Action heats up again on Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
MEN'S NOTEBOOK
- Kyle Anthony (Barryville, N.Y./Eldred Central) and Quinten Marcott (Wayland, Mich./Wayland) helped the Bison continue their successful run in the Patriot League awards this week. Anthony was named the league's field athlete of the week after winning the triple jump in his fourth consecutive meet and taking second in the long jump. Marcott earned his first career Rookie of the Week honor from the league with a fifth-place finish in the shot at last weekend's Bucknell Heptagonal.
- The Bucknell Heptagonal was successful for more than just Anthony and Marcott. The Bison finished first as a team, nearly doubling the score of second-place Duquesne. Helping with that point total was Robert Arent (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) who won the 500 with a Bucknell top-10 time of 1 minute, 25.08 seconds. Isaih Bell (Stone Mountain, Ga./Clarkston) was also victorious, claiming first in the 60 meters, while Christopher Boyd (Gaithersburg, Md./Thomas Sprigg Wootton) won the 1,000 meters. In the field events, Drew Fitzgerald (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) won the high jump, and Timothy Medlock (Evan Mills, N.Y./Indian River) took first in the shot put.
- Medlock's first-place finish in the shot put started a streak for the Bison throwers. Bucknell also took second through fifth place in the event. The 60-meter hurdle race went for a sweep of its own, taking six of eight spots in the finals. Five of those six Bison recorded personal bests in the race with times that rank in the top 10 in program history.
- Bucknell claimed a handful of top-five finishes at last year's Bison Open & Multi, a non-scored meet. Among them were Zachary Shapiro (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) and Tom Barr (Ambler, Pa./La Salle College HS), who finished third and fourth, respectively, in the shot put. Dan Mularz (Englishtown, N.J./Freehold Township was also third in the 60-meter hurdles, while Jake Schroeder (York, Pa./York Suburba) was third in the 800.
- The Bison went up against some very tough competition at the 2009 version of the Penn State National Invitational. Some of the more successful finishes included Kyle Ramer (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield), who finished fourth in the invitation 1,000 meters, and Clayton Smith (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII), who also took fourth in his heat of the 1,000. Anthony was fifth in the triple jump, and Andrew Huebner (Hampton Falls, N.H./Governor Dummer) was sixth in the 5,000.
WOMEN'S NOTEBOOK
- Sarah Bella (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) and Sasha Hornock (Dover, Pa./Dover) were the award winners for the Bison this week. Bella claimed her first Patriot League Field Athlete of the Week honor after winning the shot put with an ECAC-qualifying mark of 46 feet, 1 3/4 inches and placing sixth in the weight throw at the Bucknell Heptagonal. Hornock continued with her success in her freshman campaign with the league's Rookie of the Week by scoring in the 60-meter dash, 200 and long jump. She was third in the 60 and long jump and sixth in the 200.
- Bucknell took second as a team at last Saturday' Bucknell Heptagonal. Several Bison claimed individual victories, including Rebecca Frey (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) in the pole vault, Chelsey Musante (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) in the weight throw, Lindsay Appel (Wexford, Pa./North Alleghany) in the 500 meters, Bella in the shot and the 4x800 relay.
- The Bison fared well at last year's Bison Open & Multi. Although the meet was not scored, a handful of athletes in the Orange and Blue came away with wins. Among those still on the Bucknell roster this year are Amy Mantush (Drums, Pa./Hazelton) (high jump), Musante (weight throw) and Casey Krause (Cebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) (long jump). Krause also took second in the triple jump at the meet.
- Musante's weight throw win at last year's Bison Open & Multi was her second successful showing of the weekend. A day earlier, the thrower finished ninth at the Penn State National Invitational with one of the best marks of her career (56-8 3/4). Stephanie Fulmer (Pottstown, Pa./St. Pius X) also had a strong outing at the national meet, finishing sixth in the invitation 1,000. Her time of 2:55.12 ranks seventh all-time at Bucknell. Frey was the highest Bison placer in University Park, Pa., finishing third in the pole vault (11-6 1/4).
LOOKING AHEAD
The Bison will host their final meet of the indoor season with the Bucknell Winter Classic on Saturday, Feb. 13. The meet is the last for the Orange and Blue before the Patriot League Championship, hosted by Army the following weekend.
