Bucknell's Voss Nets Career-High 20 Points in 60-47 Women's Basketball Victory Over Colgate

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell freshman Rachel Voss scored a career-high 20 points on 7 of 14 shooting to lead three Bison in double figures as the Bucknell women's basketball team defeated Colgate 60-47 Saturday evening at Sojka Pavilion. A 14-2 second-half run that spanned nearly 10 minutes sealed a second consecutive home victory for the Bison, who improved to 6-12 overall and 2-3 in Patriot League play.
Voss's previous career high of 13 points came in the season's fourth game against Fordham and she matched it three contests ago against American. She surpassed that in the first half Saturday with 16 of Bucknell's 27 first-half points. Voss also pulled down a career-high nine rebounds, including six before intermission.
Joyce Novacek posted her eighth career double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds and added a career-high six blocked shots, moving her into seventh place on the Bison all-time list with 73. Cosima Higham also reached double figures in rebounds with 13, her third consecutive game with at least 11 boards.
Bucknell was solid overall on the boards as it held a 52-40 edge. The Bison registered a season-high 24 offensive rebounds, with Higham and Voss registering six apiece. The 52 rebounds were also a season high.
The Bison outplayed the Raiders much of the night and never trailed, but Bucknell led by just one point (18-17) with just over five minutes to play in the first half. The defense then clamped down and held Colgate to 2-for-9 shooting from the field the rest of the half. Voss tallied the final seven points of the stanza, including her second 3-pointer, to help the Bison to a 27-21 halftime edge.
A jumper from Voss and five points from Novacek helped Bucknell extend its run to 16-4 as it built a 13-point lead before the first media timeout of the second half.
A 3-pointer by Sami Kozlowski, who was the lone Raider in double figures with 13 points, brought Colgate (6-13, 1-4 PL) to within four at 36-32 with just under 13 minutes to play. The Raiders would not get closer as the Bison limited them to two points over a span of nearly 10 minutes.
A layup by Felicia Mgbada, who tallied four points and four rebounds in the second half after being saddled with two fouls in the first half, capped the run and gave Bucknell a 50-34 edge with 3:20 to play.
Colgate tried to extend the game in the closing minutes by fouling, but it could not draw closer than 11 points despite 6-for-10 free throw shooting and four turnovers by the Bison during that stretch.
Both teams struggled shooting the ball much of the night as Bucknell shot 35.6 percent and Colgate finished at 29.5 percent. Neither team eclipsed 25 percent from 3-point range or 60 percent from the free throw line.
Thanks to a late layup that gave the Bison a 52-38 edge, Trisha Krewson finished with 11 points, her eighth consecutive double-figure scoring game.
Novacek's six blocks paced Bucknell's team total of 10, which equaled a Sojka Pavilion record. The Bison last had 10 blocks in a game at Sojka three years ago against Hampton.
Bucknell has now won two consecutive games for the second time this year and is now above .500 (5-4) at home this season. The Bison will now head on the road for a mini two-game road trip to Lehigh (Wednesday) and Army (next Saturday).
