LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell field hockey continued its winning ways as it defeated Towson 2-1 at Graham Field on Sunday. Megan Krebs (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) and Morgan Kauffman (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) each recorded their second goals of the season to help improve the Bison's record to 3-1.
Bucknell led off the game in dominating fashion. The Bison earned four penalty corners and took six shots in the first 10 minutes of the game, effectively limiting Towson's (1-2) scoring opportunities. Towson found another gear midway through the first half, however, and the Tigers' heightened play resulted in a goal by Mariah Schuette at 13:13.
Towson retained its lead for almost 10 minutes, but Krebs put her ball in the back of the net to even the contest at one goal apiece. Kauffman assisted on the play, giving her 18 on her career and moving her into fifth place on Bucknell's all-time list.
The Tigers received an opportunity to regain their lead with 14:46 to play in the second half, as Christina Boarman earned a penalty stroke. Boarman shot high to the left, but Jessie Atieh (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) got her stick on the ball to make the key save.
Atieh finished the day facing seven shots and goals and making six saves.
As both teams picked up intensity late in the second period, it was Bucknell who was able to capitalize on scoring opportunities. The Bison earned six penalty corners in the second, compared to just three for Towson. One of those corners led to the game-winning goal, as Kauffman scored on a rebounded shot by Tayler Siegrist (Madison, N.J./Madison).
Although the Bison won the penalty corners battle 11-5, the two teams were evenly matched in other categories. Bucknell led Towson in total shots at 17-14, but Towson just edged Bucknell in saves, 7-6.
The Bison will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 12 when they take on Columbia at 1 p.m. in New York, N.Y. They then complete their back-to-back game schedule by taking on Sacred Heart at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 13 in Fairfield, Conn.
