NEW YORK - Christine Weiss (Bethlehem, Pa./Southern Lehigh) scored her first two career goals and Bucknell field hockey pulled out a comeback 4-3 victory over Columbia in a stroke-off in New York on Saturday. The Bison (4-1) recovered from three goals down to win their fourth consecutive game.
Bucknell's comeback from a 3-0 hole started with a goal from Marci Richard (Oley, Pa./Oley Valley) in the 43rd minute. The score, which was assisted by Corinne Raczek (Ocean Township, N.J./Ocean Township), was the second of Richard's career and brought the score to 3-1.
Weiss then kicked into gear at the end of regulation. The junior defender got her first career goal after tipping in a shot from the top of the circle. The score at 58:41 brought Bucknell within a single goal of tying the game at three apiece.
As if scoring her first goal in the Orange and Blue weren't enough excitement for Weiss, she netted the Bison's third goal of the half to knot up the contest. The goal came with just 29 seconds remaining in regulation and forced the first overtime of the year.
Raczek earned her second assist of the day on the Bison's third goal. Morgan Kauffman (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor), the reigning Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week, also earned an assist on the play as the goal came as a result of a penalty corner.
That overtime soon extended into a second period of extra play and a stroke-off as neither team was able to scorer in the extra periods.
The tie continued into the first round of stroke-offs. Both Bucknell and Columbia made three of their attempts, forcing a second round. The extra opportunities paid off for the Bison. Tayler Siegrist (Madison, N.J./Madison) got a shot attempt past the Columbia goalkeeper Christie O'Hara, and the Lions failed on their final attempt to give Bucknell the victory.
By earning the win with the crazy finish, the Bison have taken four straight for the first time since 2003.
Setting the stage for Bucknell's come-from-behind victory were the three goals scored by Columbia in the first half. The Lions' Katie DeSandis scored off a corner at 5:43, and Carson Christus followed with another goal about one minute later. Julie Garrison capped off the first-half scoring in the 16th minute.
Bucknell is back on the field at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow to take on Sacred Heart in Fairfield, Conn. Live stats will be available on GameTracker.
