FAIRFIELD, Conn. - For the second straight day, Bucknell field hockey ended regulation in a tie, but this time the Bison (4-2) were not as lucky as they fell 4-3 in overtime at Sacred Heart on Sunday. Despite having a lead for a majority of the game, Bucknell could not pull off a repeat of its late-game heroics, taking just its second loss of the season.
Unlike their matchup with Columbia yesterday, the Bison got off to a quick start on Sunday. Austin Thomas (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock) scored her third goal of the season just 1:05 into the start of play. The senior forward fired in a shot from directly in front of the goal on a pass from Marci Richard (Oley, Pa./Oley Valley). The assist was the first of the season for Richard.
Bucknell extended its lead on another season-first. Caroline Coady (Malvern, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) scored her first goal of the year by knocking in her own rebound. The goal came at 21:05.
Almost three minutes later, Sacred Heart (1-5) got on the board as Dana Luhrs scored on a penalty corner. Corners were key for the Pioneers, as they resulted in three goals for the home team. Luhrs scored her second goal of the game off another corner early in the second half to tie the score at two. The game-winning tally was also a result of a corner, this time coming off the stick of Whitney Russo at 80:47.
Despite Sacred Heart's success with corners, both teams had a nearly identical number of opportunities. Bucknell just edged the Pioneers in the category, 13-12.
Although Luhrs tied the game at 38:51, the Bison never fell completely behind. Morgan Kauffman (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) knocked in a shot off a rebound late in the second half to regain the scoring advantage. Bucknell was awarded a penalty corner in the 54th minute. The initial shot got behind Sacred Heart's goalkeeper Kim Stow and sailed high and wide left. Kauffman then netted the loose ball to give Bucknell back the lead at 54:40.
Sacred Heart's Kim Pobutkiewicz stole the momentum away from the Bison 10 minutes later to even the score at three apiece and set the stage for Russo's overtime game-winner. Luhrs again had a hand in the action, claiming the assist.
Despite finishing on the downside of the scoreboard, Bucknell had its opportunities. The Bison outshot the Pioneers 30-17 in the game, including a 5-2 advantage in overtime. Bucknell keeper Jessie Atieh (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) recorded five saves, while Stow had 15.
The loss snapped the Bison's four-game winning streak, but the Orange and Blue will have a chance to get back to its winning ways on Friday, Sept. 18 when it takes on La Salle at 4 p.m. at Graham Field.
