STORRS, Conn. - Josh Katten (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK) won the Flight C Singles on the final day of the UConn Invitational on Saturday. The freshman earned three victories on the day to take his first career title. The Bison also sent three other singles players to the quarterfinals and saw their top doubles tandem advance to another final in Storrs, Conn.
Katten began his day by finishing off a match that was suspended last night due to darkness. Day two progressed just as smoothly as the first, as Katten defeated Bryant's Cournoyer 6-4, 6-4. He then went on to knock out opponents from Sacred Heart (6-2, 6-0) and Bryant (6-3, 6-4) in the next two rounds, advancing to the championship match. Katten's day ended early, as Quinnipiac's Feldman was forced to retire in the second set due to cramping.
Joining Katten in the wins column in singles action was Clark Bogle (Hingham, Mass./Thayer Academy). Bogle won his second-round match over Visinski of UConn 6-1, 6-3 but fell in the quarters to Feldman, 6-4, 4-6, 11-9.
Ryan Marcil (Vero Beach, Fla./St. Edward's) also advanced to the quarterfinal of the Flight C singles but was unable to pull out back-to-back three-set matches. After winning the first set in his second-round contest last night, the suspended match resumed today with UConn's Burns on top of his game. Burns took the second 6-3, but Marcil got the last work winning 10-4 in the super tiebreak.
Marcil dropped the first of his quarterfinal match with Bryant's Nowak, 6-2, and although he claimed the second-set win 6-4 to stay alive, he was less lucky in the 10-point tiebreak, falling 10-8.
In doubles action, Anton Kovic (Montreal, Quebec/Milton Academy (Mass.)) and Gregg Cohenca (Purchase, N.Y./Rye Country Day School) continued their success. The pair advanced to the final after defeating UConn 9-7 early in the day, but the duo from Quinnipiac proved too much in the final as the Bison fell 8-3.
Despite the tournament originally being scheduled to run through Sunday, all matches were completed today due to inclement weather forecasted in the Storrs area.
Bucknell will host its first matches of the season next weekend. The Bucknell Invitational kicks off on Friday, Oct. 2 and runs through Sunday, Oct. 4.
