LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell men's tennis wrapped up day one of the Bucknell Invitational with eight wins on Saturday night. Kelly Morque (Rye, N.Y./Rye) and Josh Katten (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK) had a long but successful day, teaming up to win a pair of doubles matches before winning their respective singles matches in three sets to lead the Bison in victories for the day.
Morque and Katten defeated teams from Colgate and Connecticut both by a score of 8-6 to advance to the quarterfinals tomorrow. Those wins proved to be a warm-up act, however, as the two pulled out long matches in the Flight B singles.
The last Bison on the court, Katten dropped the first set 6-4 to Coglate's Graydon Klassen. He came back to take the second, although Klassen made him work for it. The second set ended 7-6 after Katten won the tiebreaker 7-3. The 10-point tiebreak to decide the match proved to be just as tight as the previous set. Katten trailed 7-5 as the players changed ends, but the freshman dug deep to pull out the 10-8 win.
Morque looked to have his singles match against George Mason's Sam Coster in control after the first set. The freshman took the first 6-0, but struggled in the second, falling 7-5. Morque righted his ship in the super tiebreak, winning 10-6.
As if that were not enough action for the Bison faithful, Ryan Marcil (Vero Beach, Fla./St. Edward's) also needed three sets to pull out his own win. A 7-5 Marcil win in the first was followed by a 6-3 win by George Mason's Davin Leonard. Marcil got the better of his opponent in the super tiebreaker 10-7 to stay alive in the tournament.
Gregg Cohenca (Purchase, N.Y./Rye Country Day) capped off the singles wins for Bucknell. The sophomore was victorious in straight sets over UConn's Joe Goldstein 6-4, 6-2.
Earlier in the day, Cohenca paired with Anton Kovic (Montreal, Quebec/Milton Academy (Mass.)) in Flight A doubles. After a first-round bye, the duo defeated Patrick Mulquin and Leonard from George Mason in easy fashion, 8-0.
Clark Bogle (Higham, Mass./Thayer Academy) and Marcil also earned a doubles win for the Bison, defeating Matt Burns and Wei Linn of UConn, 8-4 in the first round.
Play continues tomorrow at the Bucknell Varsity Tennis Courts at 9 a.m. Complete results for the Bucknell Invitational can be found at BucknellBison.com at the conclusion of the tournament.
