Bucknell Men's Tennis Opens UConn Invite with Shared Success

STORRS, Conn. – Bucknell men's tennis claimed five victories on the first day of the UConn Invitational on Friday in Storrs, Conn. Anton Kovic (Montreal, Quebec/Milton Academy (Mass.)) earned two of those wins, coming out on top in singles and with doubles partner Gregg Cohenca (Purchase, N.Y./Rye Country Day School).
Kovic and Cohenca were just one doubles pairing to earn a win for the Orange and Blue. The duo defeated the team from Holy Cross 8-5, while freshmen Kelly Morque (Rye, N.Y./Rye) and Josh Katten (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK) defeated their opponents from Fairfield, 8-1.
Kovic earned his second win of the day in flight A singles, going the distance against his foe from Sacred Heart. After winning 6-3 in the first set, Kovic stumbled in a second-set tiebreaker. The junior then rallied for the 10-7 win in the super tiebreaker to advance to the second round.
Clark Bogle (Hingham, Mass./Thayer Academy) and Ryan Marcil (Vero Beach, Fla./St. Edward's) also claimed wins in their first-round singles matches. Like his elder teammate, Bogle went three sets against Sacred heart, eventually winning 4-6, 7-5, 10-5. Marcil had an easier time of it, taking his match over Hartford, 6-1, 6-1.
Marcil and Katten, who had a first-round bye in singles action, each started their second singles matches of the day before play was suspended due to darkness. Both players led their opponents by one set at the break.
The Bison will try to continue their day-one success through the rest of the weekend. Play continues through Sunday, Sept. 27.
