VILLANOVA, Pa. – Bucknell field hockey stumbled against a strong Villanova team, falling 4-2 at Villanova Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Austin Thomas (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock) scored in her third consecutive game, while Mallory Smith (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) recorded the Bison's final goal of the day.
It took Bucknell (5-3) almost 48 minutes to get on the board with Thomas' goal. The unassisted score that came half way through the second frame was the fifth of the season and career for Thomas. The senior now leads the Bison in goals and is second on the team in points with 11.
Smith added to Bucknell's score at the 56:01 mark. Thomas was involved in that goal as well, earning the assist to help the Bison come within two at 4-2.
It was the third goal of the season for Smith.
The first-half attack by the Wildcats (5-2) was too much to overcome that late in the game. Villanova scored three of its goals on 10 shots in the opening half. The Bison recorded just two shots with neither of them getting on goal.
Bucknell and Villanova were more evenly matched in the second. The Bison outshot their opponent 9-8 and earned four of their five penalty corners in the final 35:00.
The first three Villanova goals were scored unassisted by Lauren Wuzzardo, Meredith Sabatini and Meghan Ryan. Sabatini also scored the Wildcats' fourth on an assist by Dana Ramsden.
Bucknell is back on the field next week to take on Temple at Graham Field. The game, scheduled for 12 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 27, will be broadcast live on Bison Vision. Live stats on GameTracker will also be available at BucknellBison.com.
