LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell field hockey won its fourth straight home game of 2009, upending Temple 2-1 at Graham Field on Sunday afternoon. Marci Richard (Olley, Pa./Olley Valley) and Tayler Siegrist (Madison, N.J./Madison) tallied the goals for the Bison (6-3). Siegrist also chipped in an assist, as did Christine Weiss (Bethlehem, Pa./Southern Leigh).
Richard's and Siegrist's goals came in almost identical situations. On both occasions, the Bison earned penalty corners to set up the scoring opportunities. Richard knocked in her third goal of the season at 31:59 to knot up the game 1-1. Seigrist was credited with the assist.
Siegrist added to her points total with the game winning goal in the second half. She received a pass from Weiss and netted her second career score to give Bucknell the lead.
Temple (3-8) entered the game having been shut out in each of its last four games, but it broke its scoreless streak early, getting its goal just four minutes into play. The score came unassisted to Katey DeLaco. DeLaco gathered a rebound off a shot following a penalty corner to get her first goal of the season.
The Owls began the day by controlling much of play in the opening minutes. As Bucknell eased into the game, however, the stats began to even out. By the end of the first half, the two teams were nearly identical. Both the Bison and the Owls closed out the first 35:00 with seven shots, four penalty corners and one goal apiece.
Those totals tilted back in favor of the Owls as the game wore on. By the end of the game, Temple had a slight advantage in shots at 12-9 and corners at 7-6. Bucknell won out where it counted, however, with the goals advantage.
Jessie Atieh (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) finished the day with five saves after allowing the lone goal to the Owls. That save total does not include a couple of moves made late in the game to kick the ball away from potential goal scorers and protect the Bison's sixth win of the year.
The victory allows Bucknell to stay undefeated at home this season. By winning their first four contests at Graham Field, the Bison become the second team in program history to start the season 4-0 on its own turf. No Bucknell team has started a season 5-0 at home.
The Bison will have the opportunity to set that 5-0 record when they take on Lafayette at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3 at Graham Field. Live stats on GameTracker will be available at BucknellBison.com.
