PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Bucknell men's tennis kicked off the Northeast Intercollegiate hosted by Brown in Providence, R.I., with quite the youth movement. All four freshmen and two sophomores won their singles matches on Friday, while two doubles teams of underclassmen also earned victories.
Evan Zimmer (Essex Falls, N.J./West Essex) earned a smooth singles victory in his first match in the Orange and Blue. The freshman defeated Hofstra's Jon Disley, 6-2 and 6-1. He was joined in the wins column by his doubles partner Kelly Morque (Rye, N.Y./Rye), who beat out Andres Orobitg of Bryant, 6-2, 6-2.
The freshman duo won twice in doubles competition, defeating the team from Colgate 8-4 before following it up with a win over Brandeis, 8-2.
Josh Katten (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK) and Ryan Marcil (Vero Beach, Fla./St. Edward's) were the other two Bison freshmen who collected victories. Katten won out over Bryant's Christopher McKay in straight sets, while Marcil needed a super tiebreak to pull out the win. Marcil defeated his Villanova opponent, 6-3, 4-6, 10-5.
Greg Cohenca (Purchase, N.Y./Rye Country Day School) and Clark Bogle (Hingham, Mass./Thayer Academy) rounded out the Bison's singles wins. Both sophomores took the victories in straight sets.
Bogle also teamed up with classmate Gregory Maxson in doubles. The two lost to the Hofstra team in their first match but bounced back 8-2 over their opponents from Bryant.
The Bison will be back on the courts tomorrow, as the double-elimination tournament continues through Sunday. Complete results and draws for the tournament can be found at BrownBears.com.
