LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Bucknell field hockey claimed its first win of the season in convincing fashion, earning the 6-1 victory over Siena in Loudonville, N.Y., on Sunday. Austin Thomas (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock) and Mallory Smith (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) each scored two goals, and Morgan Kauffman (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) added a goal and an assist to help the Bison (1-1) to their 13th consecutive all-time win over the Saints (0-2).
Thomas' scoring effort was a pleasant surprise for Bucknell. The senior entered the game with two goals in her entire career. Her first goal broke a 1-1 tie at 44:44, while the second came with just seconds to play. The shot hit the back of the net at 69:52, capping off the 6-1 win.
Corinne Raczek (Ocean Township, N.J./Ocean Township) and Tayler Siegrist (Madison, N.J./Madison) earned the assists on each of Thomas' goals. Raczek's assist was the 18th of her career, putting her in sole possession of fourth place on the Bucknell all-time list. Siegrist's assist gave her the first point of her career.
Despite the abundance of goals, it was Smith who broke the Bison's scoring drought. The sophomore scored her first career goal at 27:54 on a breakaway following a failed Saints corner. The unassisted goal gave Bucknell the 1-0 advantage.
After Thomas helped the Bison regain the lead at 2-1, Kauffman tallied her first goal of the season at 49:33 by beating the Siena goalkeeper stick side from 10 yards out. Megan Krebs (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) set the score at 4-1 with a goal from the top of the circle. Smith then added her second goal of the day with a score at 65:51 off a rebound following a corner.
Bucknell outdid Siena in more than just goals scored. The Bison recorded 29 shots on the game, 21 coming in the second half, while the Saints had just one. That one shot paid off, however, as it resulted in the team's lone goal by Lisa Heimerle early in the second half.
Bucknell will return to Lewisburg for its home opener on Friday, Sept. 4, taking on Vermont at 7 p.m. at Graham Field.
