ALBANY, N.Y. - Bucknell field hockey started 2009 sluggishly, dropping the season opener to Albany, 2-0, in Albany, N.Y., on Saturday. Bison goalkeeper Jessie Atieh (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) held the Great Danes scoreless for nearly 46 minutes, but a pair of late goals gave the Bison their first loss of the season.
Albany (1-0), which was also playing in its first game of the season, received its goals from Christina Patrick at 45:39 and Jess Lindsey at 48:21.
Bucknell faced a number of shots early in the game. Albany recorded 13 shots in the first half, compared to just two for Bucknell. That margin narrowed in the second half, as did the Great Danes' advantage in corners. The Bison earned three corners in the second stanza, all coming in the final 15 minutes, while the Great Danes took four.
Despite finishing on the wrong side of the scoreboard, head coach Jeremy Cook saw reason for optimism with his team.
"We had good opportunities and controlled a big part of the game," Cook said. "I am disappointed (with the loss) but okay with the progress we made."
Atieh finished the game with seven saves, playing all 70 minutes. Kelly Bruvik (Skillman, N.J./Stuart Country Day) and Christine Weiss (Bethlehem, Pa./Southern Lehigh) each registered a shot on goal.
The Bison face a quick turnaround in their game schedule as they take on Siena tomorrow at 1 p.m. in Loudonville, N.Y.
