LEWISBURG, Pa. – One current student-athlete and one recent alumnus will be representing Bucknell at the USA Track and Field National Championships and Junior National Championships next week at the University of Oregon's famed Hayward Field. Rising sophomore Stephanie Fulmer will be competing in the 5,000 meters at the Junior Nationals on June 27, while 2007 Bucknell graduate Josh Kaehler has qualified for the national meet in the javelin throw and will compete on June 25.
Fulmer recently completed a terrific rookie season in both cross country and track and field. She posted a 5,000-meters qualifying time of 17:43.87 in April at the Bison Outdoor Classic. Fulmer also qualified in the 1,500 with a time of 4:38.71 – the eighth-fastest in Bucknell history – at the Bucknell Team Challenge, but will only compete in the 5K at the Junior Nationals.
Fulmer was the Patriot League outdoor champion in the 1,500 meters, and also competed at both the ECAC Championships and NCAA Regionals in that event. Indoors, she won the Patriot League title in the mile and placed fourth in the 1,000 meters. Her mile time of 4:59.16 at the ECAC Indoor Championships ranks fifth in program history. In the fall, Fulmer was runner-up at the Patriot League Cross Country Championship, and she was named the Rookie of the Meet at both the cross country and indoor track and field conference championships.
The Junior National Championships will serve as the selection meet for the 2009 Pan American Junior Athletics Championships, which will be held at the Hasley Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, Trinidad on July 31 and Aug. 1-2. The top two finishers in each event will qualify to compete at that meet.
Kaehler broke the Bucknell and Patriot League records in the javelin with a toss of 230 feet, 6 inches during his senior year. That mark gave him his second straight Patriot League gold medal, earned him the Field Athlete of the Meet Award and qualified him for the NCAA Regionals. He later earned All-East honors with a fourth-place finish at the IC4A Championships.
Kaehler, who recently finished third at the New York Grand Prix, qualified for the USATF National Championships with a mark of 242-5.5.
