PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Schuylkill River) – The Bucknell women's rowing team sent just its lightweight eight to this weekend's Dad Vail Regatta and that crew came back from the Schuylkill River with a gold medal as it bounced back from a third-place finish in Friday's heat to claim Saturday's final by nearly six seconds.
Friday's heat was shortened to 1,500 meters due to weather conditions and the Bison took third, finishing behind Buffalo and California as the top four boats were separated by less than 1.5 seconds. The first six finishers in the eight-boat field advanced to Saturday's final.
The final was a 2,000-meter race and Bucknell crossed the line in 7:15.252, nearly six seconds before second-place California. Tulsa, which had placed sixth in the heat, came in third, but was more than 12 seconds back of the Bison. Patriot League foe Lafayette took fifth in the final after finishing one spot behind Bucknell in the heat.
Bucknell's lightweight eight will now prepare for the IRA National Championships, an event it won two years ago and placed fourth at last year. The Bison's entry into the event must still be determined by a selection committee.
