NINETY-SIX, S.C. - The Bucknell women's golf team opened up competition at the 2009 Big South Championship in wet and windy conditions Monday at The Patriot Golf Club, and the Bison sit in sixth place with two more rounds still to come. Led by a very good 78 from freshman Kelsey Meybin (Midlothian, Va./Saint Gertrude), Bucknell opened with a team score of 333.
Meybin, who made two of Bucknell's five birdies on the day, was one of only 11 in the 45-player field to break 80 in the opening round. She is currently tied for fourth place, five shots behind leader Aruka Felgueroso of Coastal Carolina, who opened with a 1-over-par 73.
Also for Bucknell, Katie Jurenovich (Warren, Ohio/Howland) posted an 83, Brittany Rendell (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) shot 85, Minjoo Lee (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) carded an 87 and Deirdre Moran (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) an 88.
Just seven shots separate the top five teams on the leader board. Coastal Carolina shot 315 as a team to take the early lead by five strokes over Radford. Charleston Southern, Gardner-Webb and Winthrop all totaled 322 and are tied for third, with Bucknell 11 shots further back in sixth. High Point is seventh at 341, followed by Presbyterian (344) and Holy Cross (368). Presbyterian's scores are not counted due to its Division I transitional status.
In round two, Bucknell will tee off at 8:45 a.m., grouped with players from Winthrop and Gardner-Webb.
