LEWISBURG, Pa. - Day one of the Bison Outdoor Classic track meet concluded with two big 3,000-meter steeplechase performances for Bucknell. The Bison men and women both landed an athlete in the top-10 on Bucknell's all-time ranks.
Junior Andrew Huebner (Hampton Falls, N.H./Governor Dummer Academy) ran to a second-place finish in the men's race, in 9 minutes, 2.4 seconds, to place second to Adidas' Luke Watson, who won in a stadium record time of 8:51.10. Huebner's time was good enough to land him in ninth-place on Bucknell's all-time performance list. Improving by almost 30 seconds since last weekend's 9:32.11 performance at the Colonial Relays, Huebner qualified for the NCAA Regional meet.
In the field events, freshman Ted Heitzman (Elysburg, Pa./Southern Columbia) took second overall in the javelin throw, with a toss of 197 feet, 11 inches to grab the ninth-place spot on Bucknell's all-time performance list and qualify for the IC4A meet. Junior Kyle Anthony (Barryville, N.Y./Eldred Central) placed third with a season-best leap of 24-4 in the long jump and will return tomorrow in the triple jump.
In the women's 3,000 steeplechase, freshman Samantha Bower (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg-Salem) had similar results, as she moved to fifth place in Bucknell's record book with a 10th-place finish in 11:20.80. Freshman Stephanie Fulmer (Pottstown, Pa./St. Pius X) and sophomore Sarah Moniz (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet Regional) placed 13th and 14th in the 5,000, running 17:43.87 and 17:43.89, respectively, to lead the Bison in the longer distances.
Senior Jessica Hibbert (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) placed 14th in the 1,500, clocking 4:42.31, as the fastest Bison this season over the distance.
Off the track, sophomore Rebecca Frey (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) took fourth overall in the invitational flight of the pole vault, leaping to 11-11 3/4 to tie her personal-best mark.
Competition continues Saturday with the decathlon 110 hurdles and heptathlon long jump beginning at 9:00 a.m.
