LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bonnie Buechel (South Orange, N.J./Columbia), a senior midfielder on the Bucknell women's lacrosse team, was named the Damon's Bison Athlete of the Week on Monday after scoring the game-winning goal in the team's 12-11 victory over Holy Cross on Saturday.
The victory was a big one for the Bison. It upped their Patriot League mark to a best-ever 4-0, kept them in sole possession of first place in the league standings, and it clinched a berth in next month's Patriot League Tournament.
Buechel scored three goals in the game, as Bucknell snapped a four-game losing streak to the Crusaders. Her biggest contributions came late, when she first set up her winning score with a big defensive play at the other end of the field.
With 2:30 to play in an 11-11 tie, Buechel intercepted a pass near the left side of the crease as Holy Cross looked for the go-ahead score. The Bison cleared then ball, then with 1:09 to play, Carol Donohue found Buechel on a backdoor cut for the go-ahead goal. Bucknell won the ensuing draw and ran out the clock.
Buechel, who also had two goals against Drexel last week, now has a team-leading 22 goals on the season. The three-time All-Patriot League selection now has 107 career goals, which ranks fifth on Bucknell's all-time list. She also ranks fifth all-time in points (143), tied for eighth in assists (36), first in draw controls (142) and tied for fourth in ground balls (120).
Bucknell is now 8-3 on the season and at 4-0 in the Patriot League has a half-game lead on Colgate in the standings. The Bison play their next two contests outside the league, beginning Wednesday at home against St. Bonaventure at 4 p.m.
