LEWISBURG, Pa. – Joe Mele (Westbury, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) and Charlie Streep (New Canaan, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee) scored three goals apiece and Austin Winter (Boonton Twp., N.J./Mountain Lakes) dished out five assists to help the Bucknell men's lacrosse team stay perfect in the Patriot League with a 17-6 rout of Holy Cross Saturday at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
Mike Danylyshyn (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport), Perry Menzies (Upperco, Md./Hereford) and Tim Brandau (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh) added two goals apiece for the Bison (5-5, 3-0 Patriot League), who used every healthy player, including all three goalies, in the win.
Colin McGeehin scored three times for Holy Cross, including twice in 13 seconds in the opening three minutes of the game to put the Crusaders on top 2-1.
Bucknell tied it on Mele's goal with 2:54 remaining in the first quarter, then the Bison erupted for six second-quarter goals to take an 8-3 lead into the locker room. Chris Palmer (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) fired a laser into the upper left corner of the cage to put Bucknell up for good 3:31 into the second quarter. Three straight goals to open the second half broke the game open and by the first five minutes of the fourth quarter the Bison emptied the bench.
Junior Ryan Bakker (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood), sophomore Jordan Nies (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) and freshman Tom Thibeault (Cockeysville, Md./Boys' Latin) all scored their first career goals in the fourth quarter. Thibeault also added an assist on Bakker's goal. Sophomore Jason Foreit (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) picked up an assist for his first collegiate point, while senior short-stick defensive middie John Togneri (Longmeadow, Mass./Loomis-Chaffee) scored his first goal of the season, while senior Will Pickel (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay) started as a pole on the faceoff wing for the first time and played quite a bit on defense.
The Bison defense allowed only two goals all day in settled situations. Holy Cross scored once on a breakout after a rare faceoff win, once in the second quarter when Chris Smirti smothered an outlet pass from goalie Nick Sciubba (Sea Cliff, N.Y./Salisbury School) right at the crease and put it back in, and twice in the third quarter against Bucknell's 10-man ride.
Sciubba started in goal and made four saves while allowing only three in 36 minutes of action. Matt Antonelli (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and Sam Finnell (Skillman, N.J./Deerfield Academy) split the remainder of the game and made one save each.
Bucknell finished with a 40-21 edge in shots and a 39-19 advantage in ground balls. The Bison also won two-thirds (16 of 24) of the faceoffs, with Jake Clarke (Cos Cob, Conn./Greenwich) winning 10 of his 15 attempts and picking up seven more ground balls.
Jimmy Harrison and Connor Sweeney made five saves each for the Crusaders (1-8, 0-4), who fell to 0-19 all-time against the Bison.
For Bucknell, the win sets up a critical game next Saturday at Army at 12 p.m. Colgate, the other Patriot League unbeaten at 2-0, hosts Army on Sunday at 1 p.m.
