Bucknell Track and Field Teams Opens Up Outdoor Season With Two Meets

Lewisburg, Pa. - Bucknell's track and field teams kicked off their outdoor season Saturday with two squads competing at two invitationals. The Bison had athletes competing at the Susquehanna Jim Taylor Invitational in Selinsgrove, Pa., and at the Maryland Invitational at College Park, Md.
Susquehanna Jim Taylor Invitational
Sophomore Marlon Woods (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) and senior Alyson Cobb (Howell, N.J./Monsingnor Donovan) led the Bison at the Susquehanna Jim Taylor Invitational, with wins in the 100-meter dash and pole vault, respectively.
Woods recorded a time of 11.43 seconds to win a finals field of 14 and register his first outdoor win of the season. Cobb cleared 10 feet to win the women's pole vault.
Sophomore Kristin Bretscher (Farmingville, N.Y./Centereach) had a busy day while competing in three events. Bretscher placed second in the 100 hurdles (17.19), second in the long jump (16-5 3/4) and sixth in the shot put (32-9 3/4).
In the 5,000, Bucknell had top finishers on both the men's and women's sides. Freshman Kelly Grosskurth (Huntington Station, N.Y./Half Hallow Hills East) took second overall with a time of 18:39.67. Sophomore Charles Murphy (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) finished in 15:42.97 as the top male Bison finisher in third place.
Sophomore Jonathan Schmalzle (Hawley, Pa./Wallenpaupack) leaped 41-3 ¼ to place second in the triple jump and freshman Jacob Lusa (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) vaulted to 13 feet in the pole vault for third, to pace the Bison men in the field events.
Maryland Invitational
Bucknell produced some top marks and fast finishes at this first highly competitive meet of the season.
Leading the way was junior Steven Pierce (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) who won the javelin throw by over 35 feet, with an NCAA-Regional qualifying mark of 213-1.
Joining Pierce in the winner's circle was sophomore Rebecca Frey (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and junior Chelsey Musante (Shelton, Conn./Shelton), who each won her field event. Frey vaulted to 11-5 ¾ in the pole vault and Musante tossed for 162-1 in the hammer throw to lead the Bison.
Junior Sean Coyne (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) won the 400 hurdles in 56.57 to win his section. Juniors Kyle Ramer (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) and Andrew Huebner (Hampton Falls, N.H./Governor Dummer Academy), along with senior Clinton Orloski (Butler, Pa./Slippery Rock), went 1-2-3 in their section of the 1,500, running 4:01.58, 4:02.32 and 4:02.85, respectively.
Freshman Samantha Bower (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg-Salem) took second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11:56.65 for the women.
Both track teams will be back on the track next weekend at the William and Mary Colonial Relays in Williamsburg, Va., at 9:30 a.m.
