EASTON, Pa. - Senior midfielder Perry Menzies (Upperco, Md./Hereford) continued his emergence from an early-season slump with a career-high four goals and an assist and the Bucknell men's lacrosse team improved to 2-0 in Patriot League play with an 18-6 defeat of Lafayette on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman Charlie Streep (New Canaan, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee) added three goals, Austin Winter (Boonton Twp., N.J./Mountain Lakes) scored twice and Brandon Buchmayr (Darien, Conn./Darien) tallied his first two goals in a Bison uniform.
Bucknell, which was coming off a pair of tough losses to Hobart and Notre Dame in which the offense managed only eight total goals, broke out in a big way against the Leopards. The Bison scored the first five goals of the game, led 9-1 at the half and 17-5 after an eight-goal third quarter.
Eleven different players scored goals for Bucknell, with Buchmayr, Chris Palmer (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) and Chris Fetchet (New Canaan, Conn./Hotchkiss) logging their first scores of the season. Menzies did not score in Bucknell's first four games of the season, but he had six in the team's two games this week.
Senior goalies Nick Sciubba (Sea Cliff, N.Y./Salisbury School) and Matt Antonelli (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) shared time in the crease. Sciubba, who was coming off a career-best 16-save performance in the loss to No. 4 Notre Dame, was called upon for six saves, while Antonelli came on in the third quarter and made three saves.
Bucknell won 17 of the 27 faceoffs, and after struggling to clear the ball against Notre Dame on Thursday, was good on 11 of 12 tries against the Leopards. Sophomore faceoff man Jake Clarke (Cos Cob, Conn./Greenwich) was 13-for-21 at the X with a game-high six ground balls.
Matt Mersky and Stefan Bauer both had two goals and an assist for Lafayette. Tom Perini, who came into the game ranked second in the Patriot League in goals per game (3.50), was limited to one goal on 11 shots.
The 18 goals were Bucknell's most in a game since a 19-5 win at Lafayette in 2004.
Bucknell, now 2-4 overall, returns home on Tuesday to face Denver at 4 p.m.
