LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell softball earned its first Patriot League weekly award on Wednesday as Jane Messersmith (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) was named the league's Rookie of the Week. The freshman pitched a complete game for the 4-3 win over Penn at the Rebel Spring Games on Sunday. She also saw action against Butler earlier that day at shortstop.
Messersmith's performance in the circle against Penn included allowing seven hits and three runs, only one of which was earned. She also gave up five walks but struck out five as well to earn her first win of her career in the Orange and Blue.
The California native is second on the team in wins this season with a record of 2-4. She has recorded 19 strikeouts in her seven appearances, including a career-best six in three innings of work against IPFW on Tuesday. Messersmith has been equally effective at the plate, hitting .300 (6-20) with a double and two walks in 11 games.
Bucknell is 7-9 on the year. The team continues its Spring Break trip at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla., with a 3 p.m. matchup with Robert Morris and a 5 p.m. contest against Butler on Thursday, March 12. The in-season tournament concludes Friday with Columbia at 9 a.m. and Bryant at 11 a.m. The Bison then return to Lewisburg for their first homestand of 2009 when they take on Drexel on March 15. Game one of the doubleheader is slated for 3 p.m. at the Varsity Softball Field.
