ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Bucknell women's indoor track and field team finished second at the Patriot League Championships behind Navy Sunday, falling by nine points, 151-142. Bucknell had won the last seven championships and have not placed worse than second since 1997. Two Bison athletes were also honored with performers of the meet honors.
"Although we are not used to finishing second here at Bucknell, I was very proud of how our team competed. We did everything we could do to win," Head track and field Coach Donner said. "It was a great meet and unfortunately we came up a little short."
Leading the scoring for the Bison was senior Megan Hathaway (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Niagara Wheatfield), who set a school record with her victory in the 500-meter run, clocking 1 minute, 14.25 seconds. She was joined in individual champion honors with teammates sophomore Rebecca Frey (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and freshman Stephanie Fulmer (Pottstown, Pa./St. Pius X). Frey won the pole vault with a height of 12 feet, 1 ½ inches, to tie her personal best, which is tied for third on Bucknell's all-time performance list.
Fulmer won the mile with a time of 5:02.07 and was awarded the honor of Rookie of the Meet.
Bucknell's 4x400 meter relay team was victorious as well with a time of 3:53.62. The team consisted of junior Lindsay Appel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny), senior Jenny Dalzell (Linwood, N.J./Mainland Regional), junior Jennifer Pierce (Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J./Northern Highlands) and Hathaway. Pierce also placed second in the long jump with a leap of 18-0. Dalzell took second in the 800 with a time of 2:16.33. Appel placed third in the open 400, with a time of 58.61.
Junior Chelsey Musante (Shelton, Conn./Shelton), who had already won the weight throw on Saturday, took second in the shot put with the third-best Bucknell throw ever at 45-2 ½. She was awarded Co-Field Performer of the Meet with Lafayette's Jessica Buzzell.
Freshman Meghan Frate (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) took second in the triple jump, leaping to 10th place on Bucknell's all-time performance list, with a 37-1 ¾ mark.
Next up for the Bison is the ECAC Championships on Saturday, March 7 in Boston.
