LEWISBURG, Pa. - Joel Dalgarno scored with 1:22 left in overtime to lift No. 19 Ohio State to a 10-9 men's lacrosse victory over Bucknell Saturday afternoon at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. Freshman Charlie Streep (New Canaan, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee) recorded his first three career goals and Austin Winter (Boonton Twp., N.J./Mountain Lakes) had two goals and an assist, but the Bison dropped their second straight road game to a top-20 opponent to start the year.
Tim Brandau (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh) and Ryan Klipstein (Califon, N.J./Rutgers Prep) added two goals apiece for Bucknell, which rallied from an early 6-2 deficit and sent the game to overtime on Streep's goal with 40 seconds remaining in regulation.
Dalgarno, Mario Ventiquattro and Jeff Ryan scored three goals apiece for Ohio State (2-1), which avenged a triple-overtime loss to Bucknell last season and defeated the Bison for the first time in five all-time meetings.
Streep put the Bison on the board first with his first collegiate goal just 2:49 into the game. Then Jake Clarke (Cos Cob, Conn./Greenwich) cleanly won the faceoff, and just seven seconds after the Streep goal, Clarke fed Winter to make it 2-0.
But that would be Bucknell's last goal for 22 minutes, and the Buckeyes tallied six in a row to take command. Ryan scored twice in just 17 seconds midway through the first period to tie the game, then Ventiquattro tallied an EMO goal to put Ohio State in front 3-2. With 2:20 left in the first period, Ventiquattro scored his second of the day to make it a 5-2 game, chasing Bucknell starting goalie Nick Sciubba (Sea Cliff, N.Y./Salisbury School).
Trailing 6-2 late in the first half, the Bison made up a large chunk of the deficit before going to the locker room. Streep, Klipstein and Winter all scored is span of just 3:13 to make it 6-5 at the half, and Brandau tied it at 6-all early in the third quarter.
The two teams traded goals over the final quarter and a half, with Ohio State taking the lead three more times, only to have the Bison answer on each occasion. It was an 8-8 game after three periods, and Ryan put the Buckeyes back in front with a goal with 6:58 remaining.
Streep tied it with an unassisted goal with 40 seconds left in regulation. Ohio State won the overtime faceoff and scored on its third shot of the sudden-death period, a Dalgarno score off an assist from James Green.
Bucknell outshot Ohio State 38-31, including 12-5 in the fourth quarter. The Bison also won the ground ball battle 27-23 and won 13 of the 23 faceoffs. Matt Antonelli (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) made six saves and allowed five goals in relief of Sciubba. Buckeyes goalie Brandon Freeman made 10 saves.
Bucknell was whistled for five penalties in the first quarter alone, but gave up just the one EMO goal. The Bison were 0-for-3 with a man advantage.
The Bison now have a week off to prepare for next Saturday's home opener, a big Patriot League game against Navy. Game time is 1 p.m. at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
