LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bison men's and women's track and field teams picked up a number of top finishes as they hosted the 18th Annual Bucknell Winter Classic at Gerhard Fieldhouse. This non-scoring meet wass a tune-up for next weekend's Patriot League Championships.
Junior Andrew Yehl (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) picked up a victory in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.27 seconds, for the second straight week, to lead the Bison in the short distances for a strong follow-up performance to last weekend's school record at Penn State.
Sophomore John Picardo (Rochester, N.Y./Hilton Central) won the 500 with a time of 1:06.47, and senior Kerry Boyle (Conyngham, Pa./Hazleton) recorded a second-place finish in a time of 49.44 to lead in the long sprints.
In the middle distances, the Bison were strong with sophomore Clayton Smith (Sparta N.J./Pope John XXIII) winning the 800 with a 1:55.12. Bucknell also swept the top four spots in the 1,000 with sophomore Christopher Boyd (Gaithersburg, Md./Thomas S. Whooton), junior Baron Willeford (New Orleans, La./Columbia Prep (N.Y.)), sophomore Jake Schroeder (York, Pa./York Suburban), and junior Conor McNamara (Baldwin, N.Y./Chaminade) timing in at 2:31.99, 2:33.23, 2:33.80, and 2:33.88 respectively.
In the men's field events, junior Timothy Medlock (Evan Mills, N.Y./Indian River) threw himself into a second-place finish in the shot put, with a toss of 53 feet, 3 ¾ inches and sophomore Nicholas Hruch (Sykesville, Md./Liberty) surprised with a victory in the high jump, leaping to tie his personal best and post the seventh best height on Bucknell's all-time top-10 performance list with a jump of 6-8 ¼.
"With only three practices under my belt and being on the mend with a groin injury, I'm surprised with how well I jumped," Hruch said.
The Bison women were equally as successful in a wide array of events.
Freshman Sarah Bella (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) and junior Chelsey Musante (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) both improved their all-time rankings in Bucknell history, while nabbing the top two spots in the shot put. Bella won with a throw of 43-4 ¼ to move into fourth place all-time at Bucknell and Musante threw 43-3 ¾ to take second at the meet and jump up a position from sixth to fifth all-time. Musante also took third in the weight throw with a mark of 56-5 ¾, her second-best toss to date.
In the relays, sophomore Leighann Diehl (Lebanon, N.J./Voorhees), senior Megan Hathaway (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Niagara Wheatfield), junior Jennifer Pierce (Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J./Northern Highlands), and senior Jenny Dalzell (Linwood, N.J./Mainland Regional) combined for a second-place effort in the 4x400 meter relay time of 4:02.68
Freshman Stephanie Fulmer (Pottstown, Pa./St. Pius X) and Dalzell took first and second in the open 800, with times of 2:18.18 and 2:19.25, respectively.
The 1,000 brought equal success as sophomore Sarah Moniz (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet Regional) and senior Jessica Hibbert (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) grabbed the top two spots; running 2:58.91 and 3:00.23.
Bucknell will be back in action Feb. 20-22 at the Patriot League Championships, which will take place in Annapolis, Md.
