HAMILTON, N.Y. - The Bucknell women's soccer team's Patriot League title quest will have to come on the road, as Colgate's Anna Baldwin scored in overtime to help the Raiders steal both a 2-1 win and home-field advantage for the conference tournament from the Bison on Saturday afternoon.
Bucknell (10-7-1, 5-2-0) brought a five-game winning streak to Hamilton for the regular-season finale and needed a win or a tie to claim the No. 1 seed and the right to host next week's Patriot League Tournament. Instead it was Colgate (9-6-3, 5-1-1) claiming the three points to get to 16, one better than both Bucknell and American.
The Eagles trounced Navy 3-0 earlier on Saturday, meaning Bucknell and American will square off in one semifinal match next Friday at Colgate. The Raiders will host fourth-seeded Navy in the other semifinal.
Despite Saturday's disappointing outcome, the Bison will be playing in the postseason for the fifth straight season, and they will be battling for their third Patriot League title and NCAA Tournament berth.
Things looked great for Bucknell early, as Kelliann Doherty (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) headed in a cross from Brooke Stokes (Gladwyne, Pa./The Shipley School) just 2:12 into the match, giving the Bison a quick 1-0 lead.
That meant that Colgate would have to solve the Bison defense twice to take the title, something that no Bucknell opponent had managed to do in nearly a month. But the Raiders got the equalizer in the 28th minute, when Jillian Arnault's shot hit the crossbar and bounced over the line behind keeper Kathryn Sutton (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area).
Colgate's Alyssa Manoogian hit the post just 32 seconds into the second half, setting the stage for a back-and-forth period. Sutton and counterpart Ashley Walsh made three saves apiece in the second half, and the contest went to sudden-death overtime.
Sutton made a save on Arnault in the third extra minute, but at the 95:47 mark Baldwin caught up to a long pass from Jillian Kinter and scored the game-winner, sending the Bison to 1-2-1 in overtime games this season.
Colgate finished with a 21-11 shot advantage, including a 10-6 edge in shots on target. Sutton totaled eight saves, while Walsh had five.
Patriot League Tournament game times will be announced later.
