HAMILTON, N.Y. - The Bucknell women's soccer season ended in heartbreaking fashion, as American's Kristin Piorun scored with 51 seconds left in regulation to give the Eagles a 1-0 win over the Bison in the Patriot League Tournament semifinals Friday night at Colgate's Van Doren Field.
Bucknell and American both finished 5-2 in league play during the regular-season, and as expected the contest between the second and third seeds was close from start to finish. Bison senior goalkeeper Kathryn Sutton (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) made seven saves before American finally punched one across in the final minute.
After a free kick, Michelle Montilio re-directed the ball toward the goal line, where Kristin Piorun was credited with sending it in for the game's lone goal.
The Bison had a good chance to tie it when they were awarded a free kick just outside the box with about 14 seconds left, but the last-ditch shot went high and wide to the right.
American finished with a 14-9 shot advantage and led 4-3 in corner kicks. Arianna Efstathiou made two saves for the Eagles (11-9), who will move on to face host Colgate in Sunday's Patriot League championship match.
Bucknell reached the 10-win mark and qualified for the Patriot League Tournament for the fifth year in a row in 2009, as the Bison finish 10-8-1.
