HAMILTON, N.Y. - Christine Weiss (Bethlehem, Pa./Southern Lehigh) recorded her second multi-goal game of the season, netting two to help lead Bucknell field hockey past Colgate, 4-2, at Tyler's Field on Saturday afternoon. Joining Weiss in the scoring summary were Austin Thomas (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock) with her team-leading seventh goal of the season and Megan Krebs (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial).
Thomas and Morgan Kauffman (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) teamed up for the Bison's (10-6, 3-1) first goal of the day, coming midway through the first half. Thomas got past the Colgate (1-14, 0-4) defense to tally her second goal in as many games and give Bucknell the first and only lead it would need. Kauffman's assist gave her a bit of a boost, giving the junior her first point in eight games.
Kauffman continued to help her team score throughout the game. She and Corinne Raczek (Ocean Township, N.J./Ocean Township) both earned assists as Weiss scored with 6:30 left in the first frame. Kauffman inserted the ball on the penalty corner, while Raczek set up the play for Weiss at the top of the circle.
The same trio struck again for Bucknell's final goal of the day. Raczek claimed her second and Kauffman her third assist on the successful penalty corner. With Weiss' second score, she improved her goal total to six, good for second on the team.
Kauffman and Raczek both moved up the record lists with their combined six assists. Raczek now ranks tied for third all-time at the Bucknell with 26 career assists, while Kauffman is tied for fourth with 23. They also both entered the single-season assists top 10 with Raczek in a seventh-place tie and Kauffman tied for ninth.
Krebs rounded out the scoring for the Bison. The Raiders came within one goal as Laura Denenga scored on a penalty corner in the final seconds of the first half. Krebs got the Bison's lead back to two in the start of the second half off Tayler Siegrist's (Madison, N.J./Madison) helper.
Katelyn Nerbonne scored Colgate's second goal on an assist by Denenga at 27:22 in the final period.
Jessie Atieh (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) made a season-high nine saves as the Raiders got 11 of their 14 shots on goal. Colgate's Sarah Pedersen had a similar outing in goal, registering eight saves. Bucknell fired off 23 shots, 12 of them getting on goal.
The Bison are knocking on the door of qualifying for their second consecutive Patriot League Tournament berth. They did their part with the win over the Raiders. Losses by American and Holy Cross kept them from clinching a playoff spot, however. The Eagles fell 2-1 in overtime to Lafayette, while Holy Cross lost 3-2 to Lehigh. Bucknell is back in action tomorrow, taking on Cornell at 1 p.m. in Ithaca, N.Y. Live stats will be available at cornellbigred.com. The Bison will then return to Graham Field for their regular-season finale with Holy Cross on Saturday, Oct. 31.
