ITHACA, N.Y. - Kelly Bruvik (Skillman, N.J./Stuart Country Day) broke a scoreless tie with 3:28 remaining in overtime to give Bucknell field hockey its third straight victory with a 1-0 win over Cornell at Marsha Dodson Field on Sunday afternoon. Christine Weiss (Bethlehem, Pa./Southern Lehigh) made the assist on the game winner, giving the junior defender her fifth point in two games.
The Bison (11-6) were looking to end their final regular-season road trip on a high note and got just that as they swept the weekend, adding to their 4-2 win over Colgate yesterday. The outcome hung in the air for quite some time, however, as neither Bucknell nor Cornell (9-4) was able to put a notch on the scoreboard for more than 70 minutes.
Bucknell let loose with five shots during overtime, but Bruvik's was the only one to get on goal thanks to a stingy Cornell defense. It was not until the Bison got around that defense that they were able to make an impact. Bruvik got behind the Big Red defenders, received the pass from Weiss and went to work one-on-one against the Big Red's goalkeeper, netting the contest's only goal.
Weiss' assist gives her five points on the weekend. The junior defender also had two goals against Colgate yesterday afternoon.
Neither team was a stranger to playing overtime periods. The game marked the fourth of the season for Bucknell and the fifth for Cornell. The Bison are now 3-1 in extra-period contests, while the Big Red fall to 3-2 in similar situations.
Bucknell and Cornell had been very evenly matched until Bruvik tipped the game in the Bison's favor. Through regulation, the each team had drawn six penalty corners, Bucknell led in saves, 7-6, and Cornell had the edge in shots 12-11. Even in extra time, the Bison and the Big Red stayed neck and neck. Both fired off five shots apiece with Bucknell making two saves compared to one for Cornell.
Sarah Zargarpour (North Vancouver, Canada/Handsworth Secondary) earned her first win of the season in goal for the Bison. She was also appearing in her first game of 2009. The sophomore made five saves after entering the contest at halftime. Jessie Atieh (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) also played a role in allowing the Bison to get to that point, turning away four shots in the first half. The team shut out gives Bucknell four consecutive wins over Cornell.
Cornell goalkeeper Melanie Jue took the loss despite making seven saves on the day.
Bucknell will go for its fourth consecutive victory on Saturday, Oct. 31 when it closes out the regular season with Holy Cross at 12 p.m. at Graham Field. The Bison will be trying to clinch a coveted spot in the Patriot League Tournament in the game with the Crusaders, which is also Senior Day. Bucknell will recognize Atieh, Sarah Ebright (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin), Megan Krebs (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) and Austin Thomas (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock) prior to the game.
