LEWISBURG, Pa. - Kelly Bruvik (Skillman, N.J./Stuart Country Day) recorded three points and Corinne Raczek (Ocean Township, N.J./Ocean Township) earned two on a pair of assists as Bucknell field hockey defeated Georgetown, 3-1, at Graham Field on Sunday afternoon. The Bison (9-6) also got goals from Austin Thomas (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock) and Sarah Ebright (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) on the way to their sixth win at home.
Thomas kicked things off with the game's first goal less than 11 minutes into play. The senior tipped in a ball from Raczek who had driven in from the end line. The goal was the sixth of the season for Thomas, who leads the team.
The Bison started to relax after taking the early lead. That came back to haunt them later in the first half, however, as Georgetown (1-15) capitalized on back-to-back penalty corners in the final 30 seconds. The Hoyas first attempt was unsuccessful, but the second worked out more in their favor. Kimberly Keating drove in a goal after time expired to tie the game at one apiece at halftime.
Bucknell began play aggressively in the opening minutes of the second frame. That effort finally paid off with just over 14 minutes remaining in the game. The Bison drew a penalty corner, which set up a goal-scoring situation for Ebright. After inserting the ball, the senior was in prime position to receive a pass from Bruvik on the left side of the cage and net her first career goal.
The Orange and Blue dominated in penalty corners throughout the game. At the end of the day, Bucknell led in corner opportunities, 11-4.
The Bison received a boost of energy from Ebright's play and, although Georgetown continued to try and attack the goal, it was Bucknell that had the last word. Bruvik earned her final points with a goal at 4:52 mark. The junior received a pass from Raczek, again from the right end line, to claim her fifth goal of the season.
By earning two assists, Raczek improved her career total to 24, placing her third all-time at Bucknell. Raczek was not the only Bison to move up in the ranks, however, as head coach Jeremy Cook is now tied with Jennifer Averill for fourth place all-time at Bucknell in career wins with 20.
Penalty corners was not the only category the Bison led the Hoyas in. Bucknell also out-shot its opponent, 24-11. The Bison got 11 of their shots on goal, compared to just four for the Hoyas.
Bucknell will return to Patriot League action and the road on Saturday, Oct. 24 when it takes on Colgate in Hamilton, N.Y. Game time is slated for 1 p.m. The Bison will then follow that game with their final non-conference matchup in Ithaca, N.Y., by facing Cornell at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 25.
