Bucknell Women's Tennis Opens Spring Season With 6-1 Loss at Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Bucknell women's tennis team opened up its spring season on one of the coldest days of the year Saturday and came away with a 6-1 loss indoors at Penn State (1-0). Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) picked up the lone win for the Bison with a straight sets victory at No. 3 singles.
Varela's victory came over Denisa Zobeideh, 7-5, 6-4. It was the 71st career win for Varela, who went 9-4 playing at No. 1 singles last spring, but missed this past fall season.
Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) and Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) also had solid showing for Bucknell in singles play. Playing at No. 2, Lucido dropped her first set to Maria Prishlyak by a narrow 7-5 margin before losing 6-0 in the second set. Dwojewski joined Varela as the only Bison to win a set when she took the second set from Lauren McCarthy. However, Dwojewski, who tied for the team lead with eight singles wins last fall, lost 6-0, 4-6, 6-4.
Bucknell (0-1) lost all three doubles matches, but Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School) and Carlin Calceterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) had the best showing at No. 2, falling to Lauren McCarthy and Denisa Zobeideh by a slim 8-6 margin.
The Bison will be idle until they take on Radford in Bethlehem, Pa., in two weeks. That match will take place at 2 p.m. Bucknell's first home match will be held at the West Branch Tennis Club in Williamsport, Pa., Feb. 1 against Quinnipiac.
