Bucknell Women's Tennis Picks Up First Win of Spring Season, 5-2 Over Radford

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Two weeks after opening its spring season at Penn State, the Bucknell women's tennis team returned to the court Saturday and defeated Radford, 5-2, at Lehigh. The Bison won four singles matches and swept the three doubles as they improved to 1-1 this season.
Radford, which defeated Patriot League foe Lehigh, 6-1, on Saturday, is also 1-1 this season. The Highlanders claimed the top two singles matches, but Bucknell won at No. 3, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6.
In doubles action, Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) and Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) teamed up for an 8-6 win at No. 1, while Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School) and Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) posted an 8-5 victory at No. 2. Ashley Globerman (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown) and Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) won by the largest margin of the Bison double squads as they took home an 8-3 victory at No. 3. All three of those doubles teams bounced back from losses two weeks ago at Penn State.
Playing at No. 3 singles, Lucido, was one of two Bison to win their singles match easily as she posted a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Tomaic. Calcaterra, at No. 5 singles, also won easily with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph at No. 5 over Iosue.
Dwojewski needed a third set tiebreaker to improve to 1-1 this spring as she won 6-2, 3-6, 11-9 over Mirna Matic.
At No. 6 singles, Lauren Rottkamp (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) had a tight first set, winning 7-6, but bounced back for an easy 6-1 victory in the second to defeat Alexandra Spector.
Bucknell will be back in action Sunday, Feb. 1, at 9 a.m. when it hosts Quinnipiac. The match will be played at West Branch Tennis Club in Williamsport, Pa. The Bison men will also be in action against the Bobcats.
