WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. -- The Bucknell women's tennis team won its second match of the weekend and improved to 2-1 on the spring with a hard-fought 5-2 victory over Quinnipiac on Sunday at the West Branch Tennis Center.
The Bison won the doubles point, then captured wins at 2, 3, 5 and 6 singles to secure the win against a good Quinnipiac team.
Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) and Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Paul's School For Girls) won 8-4 at No. 1 doubles, then both players returned to win in singles as well.
At No. 2 singles, Varela and Adrienne Markison split the first two sets, then Varela prevailed 10-8 in the tiebreaker to win the match. Lucido was a straight-set winner over Natalie Duckor, 6-2, 6-2.
Ashley Globerman (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown High School) was also a double winner, doing so in dominating fashion. Globerman teamed with Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) for an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles, then the Bison senior was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Shawna Sarson at fifth singles.
Freshman Demi Iepuras ( Chisinau, Moldova/Germantown Friends School) won at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-1 over Kasey Rosneberger.
The No. 1 singles match was a good one, with Quinnipiac's Mary Wilson winning 7-5, 4-6, (10-8) over Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School).
"We've got a lot of talent and depth on the team," said head coach Rebecca Helt. "We didn't play our best tennis, but mentally, the team is getting stronger as they continue to work on and improve the weaknesses in their games. It's encouraging to know that we can physically play better tennis than we played today."
Bucknell travels to Pittsburgh next weekend for three matches in three days. The Bison take on Pittsburgh on Friday, Duquesne on Saturday and Robert Morris Sunday.
