LEWISBURG, Pa. – Delayed one day due to heavy rains in the Susquehanna Valley on Saturday, the Bucknell Women's Golf Invitational was held under sunny skies Sunday on the Bucknell Golf Course. The Bison women's golf team, which had a pair of squads entered in the event, took fifth and 10th in the 12-team standings.
The 66-player field played 36 holes on Sunday and Penn State came away with the team trophy, defeating second-place Youngstown State by nine strokes (610-619). Bucknell's top team shot a two-round 659, while the “blue” squad shot a 688.
Junior Leah Antkiewicz (Aliquippa, Pa./Quigley Catholic) led all Bison with a two-round score of 158 (78-80) as part of the “blue” squad. Freshman Brittany Rendell (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier), who finished tied for 27th (84-83-167), was the only other member of the “blue” contingent within 10 strokes of Antkiewicz.
Freshman Minjoo Lee (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston), who was playing in her first collegiate competition, had a second-round score of 76, the lowest by any of the nine Bison entered in the event. Overall, Lee finished tied for 14th, carding a 160.
Sophomore Katie Jurenovich (Warren, Ohio/Howland) was one stroke and three places behind Lee on Bucknell's top team, which featured three freshmen. Two of those rookies, Kelsey Meybin (Midlothian, Va./Saint Gertrude) and Alex Brown (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill), tied for 29th and 39th, respectively.
Both Bucknell groups improved dramatically in the second round. The top Bison team shot a 333 in the first round and saw that figure drop to 326 in the second. The “blue” squad shot a 348 in the first round and a 340 in the second.
While Youngstown State took second in the team standings, it did claim the individual title as Samantha Formeck shot a 73-74-147 to defeat second-place Brianna Malcolmson of Penn State by two strokes. Malcolmson carded a 70 in the second round, the lowest score by any player in the invitational.
With its first home competition since the spring of 2007 complete, the Bison women's golf team will now head on the road to play at Penn State's Nittany Lion Invitational and the Michigan Wolverine Invitational next weekend.
