9/6/2008 8:00:00 AM | Field Hockey
OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Bucknell sophomore Morgan Kauffman (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) scored two goals, and senior co-captain Amanda Faust (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) recorded two assists to break the program's all-time assist record, as the Bison field hockey team defeated Ball State 4-2 on Saturday morning. Kelly Bruvik (Skillman, N.J./ Stuart Country Day) and Trina Boyer (Macungie, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) rounded out the scoring for the Bison, each recording her first goal of the season. The game was the first of two for Bucknell this weekend to be played in Owings Mills, Md., with a contest tomorrow against host Towson.
The Orange and Blue fell behind early, as Caitlin Maguire scored for the Cardinals just under five minutes into the game. That would be the Cardinals only shot of the first half, and Bucknell responded with 12 minutes, 21 seconds left in the first half, as Kauffman scored her first goal of the game, unassisted. The Bison attempted eight first half shots, compared to just the one for Ball State, but still entered halftime tied at one.
Bucknell wasted little time asserting itself in the second half. Bruvik scored at the 32:07 mark, and Boyer followed with a goal, assisted by Faust and Megan Krebs (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./GAR Memorial), off of a penalty corner just more than two minutes later.
Ball State only took two shots in the second half, but Maguire made one of them count, scoring her second goal of the day and cutting Bucknell's lead back to one with 8:16 remaining. Kauffman, assisted by Faust, would put the game away with her second goal of the day and only 2:12 left on the clock. The Bison finished the game outshooting the Cardinals 17-3 and outcornering them 8-1.
Faust now has 27 career assists, topping the 26 that Jen Zimmerman registered from 1996-1999. She also now has 65 career points, moving her into sole possession of sixth place for total points scored in program history.
Bucknell returns to action tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. for its match-up with 2-0 Towson. The Tigers defeated Ball Sate on Friday, 7-0.
