OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Bucknell senior Katie Ruiz (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) scored a goal four minutes and 56 seconds into the game, but the Bison field hockey team would be shut out the rest of the game and lost 2-1 to Towson on Sunday. The Tigers' Christina Boarman scored two second-half goals to lead Towson to the comeback victory in Owings Mills, Md.
Ruiz's goal, her second of the season, was only one of four shots on goal for Bucknell (2-2), who were outshot by Towson 17-6. In fact, Boarman herself registered 10 shots, including six of the 11 shots on goal by the Tigers (3-0). Bison goalkeeper Jessie Atieh (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) made a season-high eight saves, and defender Christine Weiss (Bethlehem, Pa./Southern Lehigh) recorded a defensive save, an impressive accomplishment as Towson entered the contest having scored nine goals in its first two games.
Towson attempted five penalty corners in the first half, but Atieh had three first half saves to keep the Tigers off the board. Boarman's first goal came 5:16 after halftime on her own drive to the cage to tie the score at one. With 11:13 left in the game, the Tigers finally converted one of their 11 penalty corners, as Boarman gave Towson the lead for good.
Megan Krebs (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./GAR Memorial) led Bucknell with three shots attempted, and along with Ruiz, Trina Boyer (Macungie, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) and Austin Thomas (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock) had one shot on goal. The Orange and Blue offense ran into some bad luck as both Boarman and Stephanie Kisic made defensive saves.
The Bison return to action on Saturday, Sept. 13, hosting Cornell at Graham Field. The game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
