LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell field hockey team registered its first shutout of the season, but the team's offense was the story of the night in a 6-0 victory over Saint Francis (Pa.) at Graham Field. The Bison (5-3) scored twice in the game's first eight minutes and had four goals by halftime, on their way to scoring a season-high six goals, the most since Bucknell defeated Monmouth 8-2 on Sept. 1, 2007.
Trina Boyer (Macungie, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) started the scoring onslaught three minutes and one second into the game, slipping the ball past Red Flash goalkeeper Erin Reifsteck on a loose rebound in front of the net. It was Boyer's second goal of the season. Megan Krebs (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./GAR Memorial) scored her second goal of the year 4:28 later, driving home a shot off of a penalty corner. Corinne Raczek (Ocean Township, N.J./Ocean Township) and Christine Weiss (Bethlehem, Pa./Southern Lehigh) set-up Krebs on the play.
Bucknell's leading scorer, Amanda Faust (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) joined the action with her sixth goal of the year at the 19:50 mark, assisted on a penalty corner by Raczek and Morgan Kauffman (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor). To close out the first-half scoring, senior Sarah Herrmann (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) scored her first career goal, putting home a rebounded shot via another Bucknell penalty corner.
The Bison opened the second half right where they had closed the first, as Kelly Bruvik (Skillman, N.J./Stuart Country Day) scored her third goal of the season, on an assist by Boyer, just 31 seconds after play had resumed. Freshman Caroline Coady (Malvern, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) scored her first career goal with 2:14 left in the game, scoring directly from the left side of the net off of a nice feed from Krebs following a penalty corner.
Bucknell finished the day with 17 shots (13 on goal) and 11 penalty corners, compared to two shots (one on goal) and one penalty corner for the Red Flash (1-7). In her first career start, freshman Sarah Zargarpour (North Vancouver, Canada/Handsworth Secondary) only had to make one save to record the shut out. Reifsteck finished with seven saves for Saint Francis (Pa.).
The Bison's next game is at Graham Field, on Saturday, Sept. 27, against Siena at 12 p.m. This contest has been announced as an Orange Crush game, where Bison fans are encouraged to wear orange to support their home team. The game will also be available to watch on Bison Vision at www.BucknellBison.com.
