Bucknell Men's Tennis Starts Opening Day of Northeast Tournament

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
The Bucknell men's tennis team opened day one of the 2008 Northeast Tournament at Brown in Providence, R.I., on Friday. The Bison are in competition with 12 other teams, including Army, Colgate and Lehigh from the Patriot League.
Bucknell's Zach Hascoe (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick) and Ryan Sandburg (Orange, Calif./Canyon) both opened the day with victories in the No. 1 Flight Singles bracket. Hascoe defeated Andrew Yazmer of Brown, 6-2, 6-2, while Sandburg beat Phil Bernasek of Colgate, 6-1, 7-6. Mark Malloy (Bronxville, N.Y./Hackley School) won his No. 2 Flight Singles match against Leland Richardson of Lehigh, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2, and Jonathan Brenner (Manhasset, N.Y./Chaminade) was victorious against Bruno Lucivero of Army, 6-2, 1-6, 6-1.
Bison sophomore Anton Kovic (Montreal, Quebec/Milton Academy (Mass.)) lost his No. 3 Flight Singles match to Villanova's Trenton Alenik, 7-6, 3-6, 6-3, and Gregg Cohenca (Purchase, N.Y./Rye Country Day School) fell to Zack Siegler of Villanova in his No. 4 Flight Singles match, 6-0, 7-5. Daniel Bednarek (Haworth, N.J./Bergen Catholic) won his No. 5 Flight Singles match against Dave Adams of Connecticut, 7-6, 6-4, but teammate Clark Bogle (Hingham, Mass./Thayer Academy) lost in the same bracket to John Drosick of Villanova, 6-3, 7-6.
Gregory Maxson (Mt. Pleasant, S.C./Hotchkiss) and Jamie Watson (Darien, Conn./Darien) rounded out singles play on the day for the Orange and Blue, competing in the No. 6 Flight Singles bracket. Maxson defeated Bryant's Andres Orbtig, 6-4, 6-2, while Watson fell to Army's Andrew Clark 6-2, 6-7, 6-3.
In the No. 1 Flight Doubles, Bucknell's Sandberg and Kovic lost to the Miller/Schulman team from Brandeis, 8-4, but defeated Connecticut's Goldstein and Schuerler, 8-6. Brenner and Cohenca won both of their matches for the Bison, topping Bernasek and Yassky of Colgage, 8-5, and List and Laftey of Lehigh, 8-4. In No. 2 Flight Doubles, Hascoe and Malloy won both of their matches for the Orange and Blue, topping Nowak and Rodriguez from Bryant, 8-3, and Nieman and Tatarsky of Brandeis, by that same score. Bucknell's Bednarek and Bogle beat Alenik and Siegler of Villanova, 8-6, but lost 8-2 to Bolinder and Jorne of Fairleigh Dickinson.
Finally, in the No. 3 Flight Doubles, Masxon and Watson won twice for the Bison, defeating Shaffer and Clark of Army, 8-5, and Feuille and Herling of Colgate, 8-4.
Play resumes tomorrow morning in Providence, R.I., before the tournament concludes on Sunday, Sept. 21.
