LEWISBURG, Pa. - Stephen Schram, a certified United States Professional Tennis Association teaching professional, has been named assistant men's and women's tennis coach at Bucknell by head coach Rebecca Helt. Schram, a 2006 graduate of Florida Gulf Coast University with a degree in political science, spent last year as assistant women's tennis coach at Radford University and the previous year as assistant men's and women's tennis coach at Wofford College.
"I'm very pleased to have Stephen join our tennis programs," Helt said. "He brings experience as both a Division I player and as a coach. His passion for tennis and coaching will make an incredible impact on our teams, and I believe he will help take both programs to the next level."
Schram played college tennis at the University of Charleston in 2001-2002, before transferring to FGCU, where he earned three letters in men's tennis. He spent 2003 as a tennis instructor at the Tough Tennis Academy in Naples, Fla., where he lived, worked and trained. While there, he taught nationally ranked junior players between the ages of 12 and 18.
Following his graduation from FGCU, Schram began working at Wofford College, where he organized practices and individual on-court workouts and assisted with recruiting. In the spring of 2007, the men's tennis team at Wofford achieved a record number of victories against Division I opponents. Schram received his USTPA certification and took on similar assistant coaching duties at Radford University, while also serving as an assistant professor for Radford's Tennis 101 (Basic Understanding of Tennis) class, for the 2007-2008 academic year.
A native of Zanesville, Ohio, Schram spent the summers of 2007 and 2008 as a counselor and instructor at the University of Notre Dame Tennis Camp for children between the ages of 8 and 18.
Bucknell's men's and women's tennis teams open their seasons with the Bloomsburg Invitational in Bloomsburg, Pa., on Sept. 13 and 14. The women's first home event is the Bucknell Invitational scheduled for Sept. 19-21, while the Bison men will host their own invitational from Oct. 3-5.
