CATONSVILLE, Md. – Patriot League Preseason Offensive Player of the Year Jennifer Dervarics (Emmaus, Pa.) broke the ice with the season's first goal, and Chelsea Brinkman (Clearwater, Fla./Palm Harbor University H.S.) tacked on a goal and an assist to help lead the Bucknell women's soccer team open the 2008 campaign with a 3-0 road victory over Maryland-Baltimore County on Friday afternoon.
Junior goalkeeper Kathryn Sutton (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) registered her fifth career shutout, but her teammates in front of her helped make it a relatively light work load, as the Bison outshout UMBC 14-3, including 10-1 in the first half. Sutton turned aside the Retrievers' lone shot on goal, and she had plenty of cushion by the game's 34th minute when the Bison punched in two goals just 1:36 apart.
In the 32nd minute, sophomore Brooke Stokes (Gladwyne, Pa./The Shipley School) slipped a pass to Dervarics, who beat keeper Christine Bacinski to the lower left corner. The goal was the 25th of Dervarics' career, seventh all-time at Bucknell.
Then just moments after the restart, all-conference defender Nicole Marotta (Bridgewater, N.J./Mount St. Mary Academy) headed in a corner kick from Brinkman, giving the Bison a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Bucknell added an insurance tally in the 73rd minute, when Brinkman scored from 20 yards out after a passing combination from Kelliann Doherty (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) and Lauren Stoller (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge).
The Bison took all nine of the game's corner kicks, and coach Ben Landis used every healthy field player. They will now have a short turnaround before suiting up again on Sunday afternoon against Saint Francis (Pa.). Game time is 2 p.m. in Loretto, Pa.
