NORMAN, Okla. - Senior Kristen Phalen (Duxbury, Mass./Tabor Academy) became the second Bucknell women's golfer in as many days to shoot a school-record-tying 73, and the Bison finished up a great week at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic with a round of 319 at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic, hosted by Oklahoma.
Bucknell finished in 13th place in the ultra-competitive 16-team field, but along the way the Bison demolished their own school scoring records for 18, 36 and 54 holes.
On Sunday, the team shot 316-308, breaking the 18-hole mark by six shots and the 36-hole record by eight. Bucknell's 54-hole total of 943 wiped out the 54-hole standard by a whopping 13 strokes. The previous 54-hole mark was a 956 at the 2006 Big South Championship at Bent Brook GC in Mobile, Ala.
Sunday's terrific second round was highlighted by a 1-over-par 73 from Emily Chiodo (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg), which tied Celine Herbin's school record. Phelan repeated the feat on Monday after posting rounds of 83-75 a day earlier. The 75 was a career best for less than 24 hours. Phalen's 54-hole total of 231 was the best on the team and put her in a tie for 40th place in an 88-player field.
Chiodo shot 83 on Monday and finished T-43rd. Also for Bucknell, Katie Jurenovich (Warren, Ohio/Howland) finished with an 82, Amy Loughney (Macungie, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) shot 81 and Leah Antkiewicz (Aliquippa, Pa./Quigley Catholic) carded an 83.
Host Oklahoma finished with a 298 team score to take the championship by four shots over Arkansas-Little Rock. Kansas had the round of the day with a 294 and finished third with a 54-hole total of 898. Iowa State was fourth at 906, followed by Wisconsin (910), Missouri State (911), Baylor (912), Oklahoma City (912), SMU (914), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (917), UTEP (919), Oral Roberts (922), Bucknell (939), North Texas (949), Kennesaw State (959) and Old Dominion (975).
The Bison ranked sixth in the entire field in birdies made with 26.
Christy Carter of Oral Roberts and Kendall Dye of Oklahoma both finished 2-under for the week and shared medalist honors.
The Bison will be back in action on Apr. 14-16 at the Big South Championship at The Patriot in Ninety-Six, S.C.
