NORMAN, Okla. -- Senior Emily Chiodo (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) tied the school record with a 1-over-par 73 in the second round, and the Bucknell women's golf team took a sledgehammer to the program's 18 and 36-hole records on Sunday at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic, hosted by Oklahoma.
Playing against arguably the toughest field in the 10-year history of the program, the Bison proved worthy of the invitation. Chiodo's record-setting round, along with a career-best 75 from Kristen Phalen (Duxbury, Mass./Tabor Academy), paved the way for a team score of 308 that broke the 18-hole team standard by a whopping six shots.
Amy Loughney (Macungie, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) shot 79 and Katie Jurenovich (Warren, Ohio/Howland) contributed an 81 to the new record.
In the morning round, the Bison opened with a team tally of 316, which at the time was just two strokes shy of the school record of 314, which had been done four times previously, most recently in September 2006 at Penn State.
Chiodo shot 77 in round one, Jurenovich and Loughney posted 78s, and Phalen and Leah Antkiewicz (Aliquippa, Pa./Quigley Catholic) both shot 83. It was a career low for Antkiewicz, and at the time it was one shot shy of Chiodo's personal best, which was a 76 at Richmond this past fall.
Celine Herbin had been the only player in school history to shoot 73. She did it twice during the 2003-04 season.
Bucknell's 36-hole total of 624 shattered the school record by eight shots. The previous record was 632 (316-316) at the Bucknell Invitational in the fall of 2006. The previous low 36 on a visiting course was 639, set during the first two rounds of the Big South Championship at The Patriot at Grand Harbor in 2005.
The Bison need to manage just a 332 or better in Monday's final round to get a piece of the 54-hole school record.
Bucknell is currently in 13th place in the 16-team field. The Bison are seven shots ahead of 14th-place North Texas (631), and they also lead Kennesaw State (638) and Old Dominion (647).
Host Oklahoma leads the event after posting rounds of 295 and 292. The Sooners' 11-over-par composite is good for a seven-shot lead over second place Arkansas-Little Rock (594). In third place is Wisconsin at 598, followed by Iowa State (599), Baylor (602), Missouri State (603), Kansas (604), Oklahoma City (607), UTEP (610), SMU (613), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (614) and Oral Roberts (617).
Oklahoma's Kendall Dye is 3-under after two rounds and has a slim one-shot lead over Sara Wikstrom of Arkansas-Little Rock. The low round of the day was a 5-under 67 by Christy Carter of Oral Roberts.
The third and final round begins Monday at 8 a.m.
