NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The Bucknell women's lacrosse team saw its 2008 season come to an end with a hard-fought 8-7 loss to Columbia in New York City on Wednesday night. Bonnie Buechel (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) scored three goals and Carol Donohue (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) had a goal and two assists for the Bison, but Molly Glynn's third goal of the night with 3:57 to play gave the Lions the 8-7 win.
The Bison finish up with a 6-8 record, while Columbia ends its season at 5-10.
Neither team led by more than two goals all night. The Bison trailed 4-3 at the half and went down 5-3 when Brittany Shannon scored 1:47 into the second stanza, but they rallied with a 4-1 run. Lauren Deitrich (Collegeville, Pa./Hill School) and Buechel scored in succession to tie the game at 5-all, then after Glynn's goal with 18:04 left put the Lions ahead, Donohue and Chelsea Peters (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) each found the net just 1:04 apart to put the Bison back in front 7-6.
With 9:06 to play, Gabrielle Geronimos scored an unassisted goal to tie the game for the fifth time.
A big turning point came with 5:36 to play, when Buechel was sent off with a yellow card. That was Bucknell's fourth card of the night, meaning it had to play down a player for the rest of the game.
Columbia took advantage when Glynn scored with 3;57 left. The Lions won the ensuing draw control and ran out the clock.
Bucknell's seven goals came on only 12 shots, while Columbia fired 20 shots. The Bison had been strong on draws all year, but the Lions held an 11-6 edge in this one.
Deitrich, Bucknell's lone senior starter, had another strong game in her collegiate finale. Along with her goal, she logged four ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers.
Donohue already held the Bucknell single-season records for points and assists, and the record books will show that she finished with 71 points on 35 goals and 36 assists.
Despite failing to reach double figures on the scoreboard for the first time in nine games, Bucknell averaged 12.8 goals per game this season, a new program record.
