LEWISBURG, Pa. - Inneke Carmola's fifth goal of the day 1:01 into the second overtime session lifted Lehigh to an 11-10 victory over Bucknell at sun-splashed Graham Field on Saturday afternoon. The loss was a tough one for the Bison, who outplayed the Mountain Hawks for 55 minutes, but let a two-goal lead get away late in regulation.
The loss dropped the Bison to 6-7 overall and 1-5 in the Patriot League, while Lehigh snapped a two-game losing streak to Bucknell and improved to 10-6, 4-2.
Paige Kasschau (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) had two goals and three assists for the Bison, while freshman Becca Devine (Arlington, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) scored three goals. Bonnie Buechel (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) registered two goals and an assist, while Carol Donohue (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) and Sarah Collins (Goldens Bridge, N.Y./John Jay) both had one goal and one assist.
Bucknell won 15 of the 25 draw controls in the game, including 7 of 9 in the second half, and had a decided time-of-possession advantage for much of the day. Donohue's goal 1:07 before halftime gave Bucknell a 7-5 lead at intermission.
Lehigh tied the game at 8-8 on Sara MacIntyre's unassisted goal with 15:48 to play, but the Bison jumped back ahead only 12 seconds later. Donohue won the draw, then passed to Kasschau along the left sideline, and Kasschau made a nice pass to Devine in front of the crease for the go-ahead goal.
Just over three minutes later Kasschau from behind the goal passed to Collins who fired it home for a 10-8 lead.
Bucknell goalie Alyssa DeLorenz (Garland, Texas/Plano East) and Lehigh netminder Kelsy Farris were both sharp all day, and both goalies made saves to keep it a 10-8 game. The Mountain Hawks, who had scored only once in about 22 minutes, got closer on MacIntyre's goal with 4:45 to play.
Buechel captured the draw, but the Bison turned the ball back over to Lehigh. With about 3:30 left Lehigh's high-scoring freshman attacker Lauren Dykstra tried to get to the goal but was called for a charging foul. Bucknell cleared and played keep-away until the two-minute mark, when Kasschau found a clear lane to the goal. Her point-blank shot was turned aside by Farris, however, and after two Bison fouls, Dykstra scored with 1:45 left to tie the game at 10-10.
Bucknell won the draw and played for the last shot, but Buechel's pass attempt through traffic did not connect as regulation time expired.
Both teams had possessions in the three-minute halves of the first overtime session, but teams tried to kill the clock and neither was able to attempt a shot. In sudden-death, Lehigh won the draw, and about a minute later Allison Thomas from the right side of the goal fed Carmola, who ended the game with a hard, high shot.
Carmola scored Lehigh's first four goals of the day, the last giving her team a 4-3 lead with 11:24 left in the first half. It would be the Mountain Hawks' final lead until Carmola's overtime score.
Chelsea Peters (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) tied it on an 8-meter shot, then goals from Buechel and Devine just 17 seconds apart put the Bison ahead 6-4. Dykstra's first goal of the day and 60th of the season made it 6-5, capping a wild six-minute stretch when the two teams combined for eight goals.
Farris finished with 10 saves for Lehigh, while DeLorenz had nine for Bucknell. The Mountain Hawks outshot the Bison 29-25.
Prior to the game Bucknell honored its two seniors, Lauren Deitrich (Collegeville, Pa./Hill School) and Ashley Flood (Westfield, N.J./Lawrenceville). Deitrich, the Patriot League leader in caused turnovers, had four more on Saturday along with two draw controls. Buechel had a game-high five draw controls.
Donohue now has 34 goals and 34 assists on the season, extending her Bucknell single-season records for assists and points.
Bucknell has one more game remaining in 2008, a road tilt at Columbia on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
