LEWISBURG, Pa. - The red-hot Bison bring a three-game winning streak into Tuesday evening's non-league home contest against 7-3 Drexel. Game time is 6 p.m. at Graham Field. Bucknell just finished a four-game road trip that wrapped up with wins over La Salle, Ohio State and Robert Morris in a five-day span. The Bison are now 5-3 on the season with a pair of home games this week.
Series Notes:
Bucknell is 8-17 all-time against Drexel, a former rival in the East Coast Conference.
The Dragons have beaten the Bison in each of the last six seasons, including a 17-6 decision last season in Philadelphia.
Bucknell's last series win was an 11-10 double overtime triumph in 2001.
Last Outing:
On Sunday afternoon in Pittsburgh, Bucknell built an 11-4 halftime lead and had to hold on for dear life in a 15-14 win over Robert Morris. Carol Donohue had four goals and three assists, and freshman Becca Devine added four goals as well for the Bison. Bucknell scored the last eight goals of the first half to take the 11-4 lead, but the Colonials scored four straight to cut a 15-10 deficit to 15-14 with 48 seconds left. They won the ensuing draw but could not get a potential tying shot off.
Beating the Buckeyes:
It was a dire storyline when the Bison fell behind Ohio State 11-3 early in Friday night's game in Columbus. This was an Ohio State team that had been ranked No. 20 in the nation a week earlier, and it was the same Buckeyes squad that dismantled Bucknell 17-4 at Graham Field a year ago. But this Bucknell team re-wrote a dramatic ending to that story, rallying for an incredible 18-17 victory. Down 17-15 with five minutes left, Alison Heffernan, Julia Braun and Sarah Collins all scored in succession to put the Bison ahead, and goalie Alyssa DeLorenz stymied an 8-meter shot in the final 10 seconds to secure the win.
Bison Duo Honored:
Bucknell picked up two of the four Patriot League weekly honors on Monday, as sophomore Carol Donohue earned offensive player of the week accolades and senior Alyssa DeLorenz was cited as the goalie of the week. Donohue scored 18 points in Bucknell's 3-0 week, including eight against Ohio State and seven against Robert Morris. DeLorenz had double-digit saves in each game, with a career-high 16 coming against La Salle.
Bison Bits:
Carol Donohue now ranks second in the Patriot League and fifth in the nation in scoring at 5.12 points per game. She has 41 points in just eight games. Donohue also leads the league and ranks sixth in the nation in assists per game (2.38).
Lauren Deitrich continues to lead the league in caused turnovers with 19 in eight games. That figure ranks fourth among all Division I players. Deitrich also leads the team in ground balls with 17.
Julia Braun is No. 1 in the Patriot League and ninth nationally in draw controls with 25 in seven games.
Bonnie Buechel is 18th nationally in draw controls with 24.
Six different Bucknell freshmen have scored goals this season, led by Braun's 11.
Goalie Alyssa DeLorenz has 81 saves on the season, while opposing netminders have only 58. Bucknell is scoring on 53.1 percent of its shots, compared to 42.3 percent for the opposition.
Scouting the Dragons:
Drexel began the season 7-1 but has dropped two straight one-goal games to Saint Joseph's (9-8 OT) and Hofstra (10-9).
The Dragons have already beaten two Patriot League teams in American (8-6) and Lehigh (14-13).
Drexel, which is 6-0 on the road, is led in scoring by senior Jessica Bill, who has 24 goals and three assists. Gwenna Johnson (19-2) and Katie Bradley (12-9) have 21 points each.
Lauren LaBella has started every game in goal for the Dragons and has compiled a soldi .541 save percentage.
Drexel has outscored foes 113-82 this season.
In the Polls:
Bucknell was picked tied for fifth (with Navy) in the Patriot League preseason poll. American adged defending champion Holy Cross by just two points in the poll, followed by Colgate, Lehigh, Bucknell/Navy and Lafayette.
Looking Ahead:
Bucknell has a big Patriot League game coming up on Saturday, when Colgate comes to Graham Field for a 1 p.m. game. That contest will feature a live video Webcast on BucknellBison.com and SportsJuice.com.
