LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's track and field team wrapped up the first day of competition at the 2008 Patriot League Championships at Gerhard Fieldhouse on Friday afternoon, completing the pentathlon. Bucknell sophomore Amy Mantush (Drums, Pa./Hazleton) and senior Denise Manero (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) scored for the Bison, placing third (3,368 points) and fourth (3,044), respectively to collect 10 team points and tie Lafayette for first place at the conclusion of day one.
After one event, Bucknell and Lafayette are tied for first place with 10 points. Holy Cross follows in third with nine points and Navy sits in fourth with two points, while Army, American, Colgate and Lehigh remain scoreless. Lafayette's Kristen Kalinowski took home first in the pentathlon, compiling a point total of 3,539.
To start out the day, Mantush led the Bison in the pentathlon 60-meter hurdles, placing third with a time of 9.49 seconds (810). Manero followed in fifth, stopping the clock at 9.81 (748), tying her season best in the event. Junior Rebecca Eppleman (Chester Springs, Pa./Great Valley) placed ninth with a time of 10.33 (652), establishing her season best for the event. Kalinowski posted the fastest time in the 60-meter hurdles (9.04; 902).
Kalinowski went on to lead the way in the second event, notching a first-place finish in the pentathlon high jump (5 feet, 7 ¼ inches; 867). Mantush recorded a second-place finish in the high jump, tying her season-best mark of 5-6 (830). Manero also recorded a season-best distance in the event, tying for third (5-2 ½; 724) while Eppleman finished fourth (5-1 ¼; 689).
In the third event of the day, Kalinowski posted the furthest distance, 33-7 ½ (546), in the pentathlon shot put. Mantush once again led Bucknell, taking fourth in the shot put with a season-best distance of 31- 6 ½ (504). Eppleman finished in seventh (29-7 ½; 466) and Manero followed in 10th (27-6 ¾; 425).
Mantush took first in the pentathlon long jump with a distance of 17-6 ¼ (654) while Manero tied Holy Cross' Olivia Pruszko for second (16-7 ¾; 578) and Eppleman finished in eighth (14-11 ¼; 441).
In the final event of the day, Pruszko stopped the clock at 2:16.96 (865) to record the fastest time in the pentathlon 800-meter run. Mantush went 2:40.25 (570) for eighth, Manero finished in 2:40.35 (569) for ninth and Eppleman recorded a season-best time of 2:45.26 (514) for 11th, bringing her point total to a season best of 2,762 for ninth overall.
The 2008 Patriot League Championships will resume Saturday and run through Sunday afternoon, Feb. 24. Saturday's events will start with the conclusion of the men's heptathlon at 8:45 a.m. Field events will follow at 11 a.m., and running events are set to begin at 1 p.m.
