LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's basketball team has announced the addition of four players for the 2009-10 season. Lindsay Horbatuck, Rachel Voss, Alyssa Dunn and Felicia Mgbada have signed national letters of intent to attend Bucknell.
Horbatuck, a 6-0 forward from Avon, Conn., is a member of the Avon High School team that won the Connecticut Class M 2008 state championship and was named the State Champion MVP the same year. A two-year team captain, Horbatuck averages 14 points and 13.5 rebounds per game. She also is the only player in her high school team's history to register at least 300 points and 300 rebounds in a single season. Horbatuck set a number of rebounding records throughout her junior year, including the career lead with 828 boards in just three season, single-season records with 181 offensive and 184 defensive rebounds and the best single-game total of 26. As a junior, she was named First Team All-State by the Hartford Courant, New Haven Register and Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference.
"Lindsay runs the floor extremely well for a forward and is very mobile and agile in the pressing game, which fits extremely well in our style of play," said Bucknell head coach Kathy Fedorjaka. "I love the fact that she is from a winning program and knows what it takes to win championships. Lindsay is a tremendous rebounder who really has a nose for the ball."
Voss carries a grade-point-average of better than 4.0 and has earned a number of academic accolades, including three Academic All-Conference selections and induction into the National Honor Society. On the court, the 6-1 guard/forward from Loveland, Ohio, averaged 13.6 points and 7.5 rebounds per game as a junior. Voss posted seven double-doubles, with her best effort resulting in 24 points and 12 boards. Both a three-year team captain and most valuable player, Voss has most recently been honored with a selection to the Windy City Classic All-Tournament Team and a Wendy's Heisman High School Award.
"Rachel is a very good athlete who plays both the guard and forward positions," said Fedorjaka. "She can shoot the ball from the perimeter, attack off the dribble or post up. A fantastic defender, her length and athletic ability will be assets in our style of play."
Dunn, a 5-10 guard from Cincinnati, has accumulated more than 1,000 points in three years with 409 of them coming just last season at The Seven Hills School. She averages 17 points and four steals per game and was named to the Cincinnati Enquirer All-City First Team as a sophomore before earning the newspaper's Division IV Player of the Year award as a junior. For her excellent play in 2007-08, Dunn also earned the Greater Cincinnati Basketball High School Hall of Fame Division IV Player of the Year award. Dunn has excelled in the classroom as well, earning All-Conference Scholar-Athlete honors in addition to being named a 2008 National Merit Semifinalist and National Achievement Scholar.
"Alyssa has tremendous speed and defensive quickness," said Fedorjaka. "I feel she will be one of the fastest players in our conference. Alyssa will spend time as a combo guard - both at the point and `2' guard positions. She will be a great defender and tremendous in our transition game, and she can shoot the ball well from the perimeter."
Mgbada, a forward who will play at the Blair Academy in Blairstown, N.J., this season, averaged 14 points and 10 rebounds per game as a junior at her previous school. She was chosen as the 2008 Somerset County Tournament Most Valuable Player on the way to helping her team to its second Somerset County Tournament title. Mgbada was named to the Courier News All-Area Second Team and the Star Ledger All-Prep First Team. Through three years of high school, she has amassed 785 points.
"A fantastic athlete at the 6-2, Felicia can defend any position from the `1' to the `5'," said Fedorjaka. "She has great feet and tremendous shot-blocking ability. Felicia has a great first step and can really get to the rim. She will be strong on the glass as well as in transition."
The Bison are 4-5 in 2008-09. They next play Saint Francis (Pa.) at 2 p.m. in Loretto, Pa., on Sunday, Dec. 28.
