Bucknell Men's Swimming & Diving Defeats American and Lafayette

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's swimming & diving team won two of its three dual meets at Kinney Natatorium on Saturday, Nov. 8, defeating conference rivals American (234-45) and Lafayette (207.5-91.5), but losing to Navy (159-124). The Bison now have a 4-1 record in dual meets this season.
Bucknell freshman Jonathan Podniesinski (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) won the 400-yard IM in four minutes, 14.32 seconds. He finished second in the 200 breast (2:11.88) and third in the 1,000 free. Bison senior Mark Kawczenski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Hanover Area) won the 100 back in 52.20, while finishing second in the 100 free (47.10) and tied for second with teammate Eric Sokolosky (Branford, Conn./Branford) in the 50 free (21.67). The Orange and Blue's Gonzalo DeLeon (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland Regional) won the 200 back in 1:53.98.
The Bison won the 400 free relay in 3:11.08, finishing 5.58 seconds ahead of the rest of the field. Sokolosky led off the relay for the Bison, followed by Daniel Fletcher (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove), Taylor Harris (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) and Luke Trafton (Bath, Maine/Morse). Kawczenski, Sokolosky and Fletcher teamed with Bucknell freshman Nathaniel Frye (Franklin, Pa./Franklin Area) to finish second in the 200 medley relay, touching the wall in 1:35.59.
Bucknell sophomore Michael Volpe (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) placed second in the 100 fly (53.00), while Harris was fifth in the 200 fly (1:59.13). Trafton was the best for the Bison in the 200 free (1:43.46) and 500 free (4:43.49), finishing fourth and third, respectively.
In diving, Jeffrey Manning (Bringhurst, Ind./Carroll Jr./Sr. High) won the men's three-meter dive with a score of 243.35. He finished third in the one-meter dive (245.30).
The Bison will return to action and Kinney Natatorium on Saturday, Nov. 22, for the two-day Bucknell Invitational. This is the final meet for Bucknell until Jan. 10, 2009, when Colgate travels to Lewisburg.
