WORCESTER, Mass. - Kyle Miller's goal with 3:42 left in the second overtime period sent Holy Cross to a 2-1 victory over Bucknell in an early battle for first place in the Patriot League men's soccer standings Saturday afternoon at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium. The Bison, playing a school-record fourth consecutive overtime contest, fell to 4-5-3 overall and 1-1-0 in the Patriot League, while Holy Cross improved to 6-2-2, 2-0-0.
Holy Cross, the league's top defensive team thus far allowing only seven goals in its first nine games, owns the best overall record in the Patriot League, but the Bison jumped on the Crusaders early, scoring only 9:42 into the contest.
Luke Joyner (Dallas, Texas/J.J. Pearce) played a pass over the Holy Cross defense to Anthony Ferraro (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional), who went in alone and shot into the left corner of the goal from the top of the penalty box for a 1-0 Bison lead. The tally was Ferraro's third of the season.
Bucknell had a goal called back by a foul in the third minute of the second half, and it would remain a 1-0 game all the way into the 80th minute, when Holy Cross finally got one past Bison keeper Tommy Caso (Phoenix, Md./McDonogh). The Crusaders played a ball into the box and Caso came out to punch it away, but Philippe Candido headed the rebound back in to tie the game.
Then in the 107th minute, Kyle Miller scored the game-winner off an Andreas Andrews assist, ending Bucknell's five-game unbeaten streak (2-0-3) against Holy Cross.
Bucknell has now played four consecutive overtime games within the same season for the first time ever. Previously, the Bison lost 2-1 in overtime at Saint Francis (Pa.) on Sept. 24, they defeated Navy 2-1 in OT last Saturday night, then tied La Salle on Wednesday on the road.
Bucknell did finish the 1977 season with three straight OT games, then started the 1978 campaign with an overtime tie with Gettysburg, but never before had it played four in a row within the same season. The Bison have already played six overtime games this season and are 1-2-3 in those contests. The school record is eight OT games in a season, set in 2000.
Caso finished with a career-high nine saves for the Bison, who were outshot 17-7 in the game.
The Bison return home next Saturday to face Army in a Patriot League game at 7 p.m. at Holmes Stadium.
