LEWISBURG, Pa. - Mark Schmiegel (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) scored his second overtime goal in two weeks, this one coming 2:20 into sudden death as the Bucknell men's soccer team handed Army a 1-0 defeat Saturday night at Holmes Stadium.
The Bison, playing their school-record fifth consecutive overtime game, outshot Army 19-4 in improving to 5-5-3 overall and 2-1 Patriot League play. The Bison defense was stout all night, holding the Black Knights (1-9, 0-2) without a single shot on goal en route to Bucknell's third shutout of the season.
The Bison controlled play for much of the contest, but Army stood tall in its own box and turned aside several good scoring chances. It seemed as though Bucknell might not be able to extend its school-record scoring streak to a 28th straight game, but the Orange & Blue finally cashed in on a pretty passing sequence in the extra period.
Conor O'Brien (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./St. Anthony's), who played very well in the midfield all night, set the winning goal in motion by playing a ball ahead to Chris Hennings (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) along the right side of the box. Hennings sent a crossing pass in the direction of Alex Russo (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy), who dummied it through his legs to Schmiegel, who fired a left-footed shot into the open left side of the net.
Schmiegel had just missed putting the Bison in front with two minutes left in regulation, when his low strike from the top of the 18 just skipped wide.
Bucknell was flying in the final 10 minutes of the first half but came up empty. Hennings was right in the middle of the team's three best chances of the half. With eight minutes left Hennings found himself all alone from 12 yards out but his shot just sailed over the crossbar. With 3:30 remaining, he made a long run down the right side and found Russo at point-blank range, but Russo's strike barely missed to the right of the frame.
Then with two minutes to play in the half the Bison hit the Black Knights with a flurry in the box, but A.J. Glubzinski made the toughest of his four saves on Hennings at the right post.
The physical game featured a total of 27 fouls, 19 committed by Army.
Schmiegel's goal was his fifth of the season and his 12th point of the season. Both marks are career highs, one better than last season. Hennings upped his Patriot League-leading point total to 17 with his overtime assist. He also assisted on Schmiegel's OT tally against Navy two weeks ago.
Bucknell is now 2-2-3 in overtime this season. The Bison are closing in on the school-record eight OT games played in 2000.
Bucknell now has a week off before hosting Colgate next Saturday at 4 p.m. at Holmes Stadium. Bucknell and Colgate are tied for second place in the Patriot League standings, one point behind Holy Cross.
